Funny to think that 30-30 is a no no but you can hunt with 38 special. Laws are funny but it sounds like a step in the right direction.

For some reason straight wall cases are the cryteria for a safe round in rural Ohio, bottle-neck cartaridges are deemed too powerful, and therefore unsafe.
And if the barrel length for a handgun is less then 5" you cannot hit a deer even if it is 6 feet away.
At least that is what the DNR will tell you.

What an odd law. It talks to nothing around external ballistics or terminal ballistics. Here in Australia there are some similar quirks. Here in the state of Victoria there is a calibre but not case length restriction for deer. So a 300 black-out is legal but a .243 may not be, depending on deer species.

One of the things I don't miss about New Mexico. Tag lottery for deer, bag limit-one buck, 5 day season. No caliber restriction for deer, though.

Yup. That fact of life does stink.
When it was shotgun season, it was a week, then one weekend. But, they got rid of the weekend season last year.

Good thing I bow hunt as well. I'm supposed to meet up with a friend of mine for some hunting on his acreage this season. Wasn't able to make it last season.

It amazes me how stubborn some places are about opening up their deer seasons even when the place is absolutely overrun with deer. Would it really be so bad to give us a few extra days early or late in the season? I totally respect archery hunters and don't begrudge them their long seasons, however archery just isn't a realistic option for some folks. I barely have enough time to practice with a centerfire rifle much less a bow.

Still the new rifle option is progress. Back when I started hunting our modern rifle season was 7 or 9 days depending where you go, now it's 9 or 16. Crossbow season now lasts almost as long as bow season.
