    Looking for opinions on scopes...

    Hey gang-

The time has come for me to scope my M1A-NM. What I would really like is a Nightforce, but my bank account says that is a no-go, I've been thinking of a Leupold VX-3 3.5-10X40, but then I noticed the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam 3-10 X 40. The Leupold is a known quantity, (while I don't have that particular version, I own several VX-3's), but the Weaver is outside my experience, (other than some old steel tubes). I do like the price of the Weaver, but like most of you I really don't want to spend money on a ***.... So, does anyone want to venture an opinion on the newer Weavers, or better yet this scope in particular? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, thanks much.

Not familiar with the Weaver, but I have been impressed with Nikon and Burris, and neither are as expensive as Leupold. I have also been looking at this family of scope:

price seems reasonable, and it is a Zeiss. Not necessarily tactical, but nice features none the less.

Try Samplelist.com first then swfa.com I like Meopta ZA series. Very bright and they sport German glass...not Japanese or Chinese. They are reasonable and would pick one over all the brands (other than Nightforce) you mentioned.

I am quite happy with my four Nikon scopes. But ill be trying a Vortex next. While Leupold makes a fine scope i feel they are over price for what you get.

The SWFA and Vortex scopes are well regarded.

You will may benefit from asking the question on the Snipershide forum.

Or just haunt their forums swap/sale for a good deal on a good used scope at a great price.

There was a write-up in the last months American Rifleman about a Weaver Kaspa 2.5 X10 X44 Tactical scope. In very short words, they liked the optics and features of the Weaver scope. They said it did not do very well in "shooting the box" and what the mil-dot reticle called for in elevation adjustments did not match actual needed adjustments. They did say that the scope did hold zero through magnification increases. Again they did say the scope had features that were not usually found on scopes of that price range and likes the Weaver warranty. If you need the article I could scan and E-mail it to you.
One word of advice on scoping an M1A. Watch the weight. That puppy with mount and scope gets to be heavy.
