Speer 200m Primers ??

I recently had 2000 speer no. 200m primers arrive. They have been stored properly. I need some guidance on use.

The label says cal. 30 NCNM Primer, percussion. I take that to mean Non Corrocive National Match.

Are these magnum primers or are they just match grade large rifle primers. Help is requested.

As far as I know, CCI 200's are large rifle primers and their benchrest primers are BR2. However, CCI does also make primers with a harder cup to resist slamfires in auto loaders with free floating firing pins.

I would call or email CCI; it never hurts to be sure of what you have.

Rats, I should pay more attention; you clearly stated Speer 200m and I not so clearly understood CCI 200m.

A partial explanation is found in the Speer reloading manual #10. In 1950 Dick Speer changed the name of his comapany from "Forged from Solid"to "Speer Cartridge Works"; this lasted until 1956, when confusion with his brother Vernon's Speer Bullet Company caused a name change to CCI.

So I guess my advice to contact CCI is still a valid idea.

The speer manuals that I have are too old for the vintage of the primers I have in hand. I have been looking for speer 7-10 and have yet find one in my travels. I thought maybe someone with one in time frame may have help on designation.

From a Speer #7 manual; there are no Speer primers listed, only CCI.
500- small pistol
550- small pistol magnum
400- small rifle
450- small rifle magnum
300- large pistol
350- large pistol magnum
200- large rifle
250- large rifle magnum

I am looking at a Speer #8 manual as I type this. Speer primers are not listed, The CCI large rifle primers listed are 200 and 250. 200 is regular and 250 is magnum, just like today. I began loading in 1959 or 1960. It was hard to find Win. or Rem. primers then, so I used CCI, which are still my favorites. Back in those days, the "Big Two" were lukewarm about reloading, and Federal didn't sell primers becase they didn't sell centerfire rifle or pistol ammo. Notice: in 1960 I used CCI primers, not Speer. I have never seen Speer primers. I have Speer manual #1, (1954) #8 (1970) and #11, 12, and 13. #1 names no brands in its discussion of primers, and #8 lists Alcan, CIL, (Canadian Industries Limited) Federal, Hodgdon, Omark-CCI, Remington, and Winchester-Western.

Also, "NCNM" most likely means non corrosive, non mercric.

#6, cica 1964, lists CCI, not Speer. BTW-Early Speer manuals are on Ebay all the time.

OK all thanks for the info thus far. I will try to take some pictures of the packaging. I have a hunch that the numbering scheme on these matches that of today, but that is what I am looking for.

I was not around and definitely not reloading for this vintage of supplies, so maybe someone will have a memory jarred loose by the sight of the packaging.

I am going to use them, cautiously to start. But none the less they will be put to the test. I loaded some 6.5x55 with them last weekend and hope to test fire them sometime this week.

No big deal. Take a known primer and prime two cases with the other being a Speer. Chamber them in a rifle one at a time and stand outside next to a wall. Place a penny on top the barrel crown and pull the trigger. Watch how high each goes for an idea of primer strength.

I went thru Handloaders Digest volume`s 1 thru 4 and could not find any mention of them.
I have long since traded/sold my earlier copies of Speer manuals. #10 being the oldest here now.
I was staring at my pile of Dean Grennell`s ARA Bulletins (1964 thru 1970) and nearly started leafing thru those as well!
I`m sure that if you post a pic the crew here will figure it out.

The slamfire-resistant CCI large rifle primers are #34. They're magnum primers.
