    The Hyde Base-Method of Patching

Here is a picture of how the Famous Long Range shooter of the original Creedmoor Era, Frank Hyde, patched his bullets, Something that Dan Theodore and Myself have quite by accident have adopted and reintroduced. Several sources mention this: Edwin Perry's Modern Observations on Rifle Shooting (3rd Edition 1880) and Shooting and Fishing Aug 9th Issue 1888.

I have went to this type wrap also as it just made sense that the "flat" base would be more consistent. Mine have a smaller opening in the patches base. Thanks for the Pics of this Ken It shows alot there.

That's how I've been doing mine since I started patching for my 45/70. Having that little tail sticking out the base of the boolit just looked silly to me and I couldn't see where it would help accuracy.

This a lot less work also as you don't have any tail to trim off. Also it bears mentioning to not bring the patch any farther up the sides of the bullet than needed.

Since I learned this here from Kenny W., it is the way I patch boolits now too. It works great and shoots better than any other method I have tried, both with cartridges and in muzzle loaders.

So, do you have a card wad immediately below the boolit base?
I suspect that when fired, the wad helps immensely in maintaining the patch fold-over.

3 wad stack, kinda my signature, .060 veg fiber used to compress the FG Goex .380, then .060 poly wad, lastly this is new this year instead of my .090 Cork Wad I used a 1/8 felt wad sets the bullet out a weee bit further. This is in my 45-110, aka 2-7/8ths Sharps.

...this is new this year instead of my .090 Cork Wad I used a 1/8 felt wad ...
Kenny - dry felt has been my Go To wads ever since I read that Harry Pope used them stamped out of old felt hats
And if folks want felt to use in their reloads ...

Please forgive my ignorance but...are these wet or dry patched? Every time I think I know enough to attempt patching I learn how little I know.

My patches go on dry. Once the boolit is wrapped tightly and I am happy with the patch, I hold it from unrolling with a finger at the seam where the patch meets the ogive and give the patch a light smear of Crisco before finger seating atop the wad/powder column. A light taper crimp finishes things off and it's ready to shoot.

Lots of folks wet patch so my method won't work for everyone.
