Missouri bullet cast in the 30-30 marlin

    http://www.missouribullet.com/detail...ary=&keywords=
I was talking with Brad: the owner he stated he can do .311 on the diameter instead of .308
I would like to push them around 2000 FPS with out gas check.
I wonder if any one here loads the above cast bullet in the Marlin 30-30 if so what the pro or cons with a BHN of 18

2000 FPS with a plain base 311 bullet in a Marlin. Is this a Microgroove barrel, like most 30-30s are? Is .311 a minimum of 1-2 thousandths over the barrels groove diameter? I've seen some Marlins that are over .312, I'm not feeling very optimistic here. The velocity itself is enough reason to go with a gascheck. Regardless, you need to verify your barrel dimensions if you have not already done so.

yep: marlin barrel.I yet slug the bore
I had a buddie load some soft cast at .308 diameter at 1400 FPS the gun shot great at 50 yards 2" group with iron Sights
I need to up the FPS for deer hunting

    lonewolf,
If you push a plain based 160+ gr cast bullet to 2,000 f.p.s. you will have lots of lead in the barrel .... regardless of how hard the bullet is.
It would be best to not exceed 1,500 f.p.s. for best performance.

Being sarcastic but just had dinner and drinks. I am not a seasoned grey hair but my experiences with the Marlin and Glenfield in 30-30 taught me that PB and 2000fps are a sure recipe for leading. Slug the barrel and work from there. Accuracy trumps velocity.

I can confirm that a 165gn RD with GC running at 1850fps will take down white tail deer very well. My dinner earlier this evening included venison sausage from a doe I took 2 weekends ago using this boolit from the 1965 Glenfield. I seat the GC and size through a Lee die at .310 and lube with 45-45-10.

My Marlin MG .30-30 leads with ANY plain based boolit at ANY velocity, there's just too much jump across the famous Marlin throat. Paper gas checks or a filler can easily take care of that, but even then it's tough to get decent accuracy out past about 1700 fps. Just use a gas check. .311 is PROBABLY a minimum, but it depends on the gun. Make an impact impression ("Pound Cast") of the chamber neck and throat and see what you have to work with.

Won't Missouri put on the checks and lube them for you?

Shop elsewhere. Perhaps Oregon Trail, Rimrock, or Cast Performance.

PB and 2000fps are a sure recipe for leading And lousy accuracy. If Jerry @ Carolina Bullets is still running, he makes a good RD Marlin version and GCs. Get it without lube & do that yourself. You can stop any leading problems with PC or PP but you will NOT get good accuracy with the PB (do you want to spend a year developing a load to meet your criteria?).
    Whatever!

I add a gas check to their 165 grainer, it comes out at 175 grains. I have an older Marlin sold by Wards and my son has a newer one, both are microgrove. I have to trim the cases shorter so the round will chamber, the boolit will just touch the rifling. I use H335 and velocity is over 2000 fps. No leading and we easily hit a 10" steel plate at 100 yards.

How do you keep it in place? If that gascheck falls down into the body of the case, you could have some real pressure issues.

No deer but shoot the RD 311165 GC TL. Seat into the groves, brass at standard suggested length. Cast 50/50 with 45/45/10 lube no leading from .311 or .310. Mid range loads so far. Real good 50 yd groups. No 100yd data yet. Hope to shoot more soon.

I will say I been lucky with my 38-55 as far as pushing high FPS with out barrel leading and gas checks
My 38-55 with a Sarco 255 grain Fp .379 or .380 dia: with IMR 3031 34.5 even 35.0 grains is a killing machine bullet.
I need to look into the bore on the marlin and slug it before I try any thing

.307 165grs plain base at BHN 15 works very well in my 1968 336 Texan, when paper patched to .313" with 9lbs onion skin. I generally do not exceed 2,000 fps and like 4198 for this. I do not like gas checked or naked lead in my Marlin micro-groove. Paper jackets work well, feed well, and leave a nice clean barrel.

I can assure you soft cast at 1400 fps will handle Whitetails easily. In my 336 I size to 309 and push to 1700 fps with 2400. It's very accurate and very deadly. My boolits are 311041 with a small HP one part WW to two parts pure.
In my gun the Missouri bullets 165 plain base shot pretty good with 5 gr of clays. Wild guess at 1000' fps. Much above that looked like shotgun patterns.
Some people live and learn but I mostly just live

You're spot on, Wolfer. He shouldn't have to "up the fps for deer hunting". There's another post on this site running right now with a picture of one of our fellow members and a picture of the huge elk that he shot. With his 38-40, no less. For sure his boolits weren't going 2000 fps. and that elk looked pretty dead in that photo.

Yes, absolutely. The only drawback may come at ranges beyond what is ideal for the .30-30 with ANY load or boolit. You have optimized your alloy and velocity to each other for hunting, which I feel is a very important consideration for any cast boolit hunter, regardless of what they shoot.

I run them through the lee sizing die, they are crimped tight to the boolit.
