Post .313 (.32 Caliber S&W) mold descriptions for Lyman / Ideal molds

Scrounged up some descriptions for .313 diameter molds from a variety of sources. If some of you-all have better descriptions from Ideal or Lyman catalogs, please post to this thread with the correction or description of the boolit.

Disclaimer: It is well known that (at times) cherries have been used too long, with undersized cavities resulting. Some throats are too big compared to the groove diameter. Over time, manufacturers held different tolerances and dimensions for the chamber and bore. Different alloys will turn out different diameters. What follows below is simply a collection of the various Ideal and Lyman mold descriptions, which does NOT mean that any particular mold will cast a boolit like you expect. What does this mean? Slug your bore if you don't know the bore/groove dimensions for your gun. If the mold is undersize, you may have to beagle / lap it out some. [ed]

NOTE: Any loads mentioned are taken from period documents, and are not in any way tested. Please refer to modern loading manuals for safe loads. [ed]

    .313 is the proper diameter for bullets for the following: .32-30 Remington; .32 S. & W. Short; .32 S. & W. Long; .32 Harrington & Richardson; .32 Merwin & Hulbert ; .32 Colt's New Police, etc.

    31355 This is the regular .32 S. & W. Short. (PB, RN, 85 - TP is 465)

31356 This is the regular .32-30 Remington. (PB, FN, 125 - TP is 8)

    31357 This is the .32 Colt's New Police, and .32 S. & W. Long. (PB, FN, 100 - TP is 8)

31358 Round ball for light charge or short range practice. Too much powder will cause them to jump the rifling. The proper charge will do good work. (47)

315158 This is a special bullet used by some shooters; in the .32-40, .319 rifles it requires a thin paper patch. It is also the correct diameter for the Mannlicher rifle, 8 m/m. (PB, SP(?), 195 - TP is 226) Also 316158.

313226 Designed for the .32 S&W Long. The band in front of shell makes additional length of bearing. Suggest 2.5 grains of Bullseye. (PB, RN, 93 - TP is 226)

313249 Designed for the .32 S&W, with 2 grains of Bullseye. (PB, RN, 84 - TP is 226)

313260 Plain base bullet for .32-40 and also 30 calibers. (PB, FN, 173 - TP is 445)

313307 Long nose plain base for 30 calibers. (PB, RN, 220 - TP is 226)

313445 Wad cutter bullet designed for the .32 S&W Long. (PB, SWC, 95 - TP is 445)

313492 Wad cutter bullet designed for the .32 S&W Long with crimping groove. (PB, WC, 93 - TP is 495)

313493 Flat nose bullet designed for .32 S&W Long or other 32 calibers with crimping groove and wide grease band. (PB, FN, 104 FN - TP is 8)

    313631 100 gr. SWC GC

I use 313249 in 32 S&W. I use 313226 in 32 Long. One you missed that I have come to really like is 313445, it is a rather odd SWC that works really well in 32 Long and 32 H&R Magnum. For 327 Fed. Mag. I use 311316, mine drops big and I size .313. For all my 32-20 revolvers I use 3118 sized .313. All my 32 hand guns except the Walther PP get boolits sized .313.
My Marlin and Winchester 32 W.S. long guns thrive on #319247 and LBT #321.150

The Lyman '58 HCB has the 313445, but I start with Farrow's American Small Arms, then the 1897/1900/1929 Ideal catalogs, then the Lyman HCB for the newer ones, along with the TPs. The .319 are next....

I think I have almost all of the designs mentioned that are appropriate for the pistol calibers. Later the 31358 was simply marked with the ball diameter of 313.

The 313445 really is a SWC design, rather than a full WC.

I would suggest you consider including a few of the bullets designed for the 32-20 as well, just because many of the .32 shooters use them in their guns.

    3118 (later renamed 311008) 115gr PB FN TP #8
31133 Almost identical to #3118 except this was the factory HP version and as a result weighs 105 gr
    311316 112 gr GC FN TP#8
    311419 95 gr GC FN TP #8

I'm trying to keep from descending into sizing madness. I just described some 360 molds that could be ordered in -S, for sizing as .358 diameter. Just trying for now to get the descriptions onto the web in a text friendly format. Some PDFs are an image (1897 Ideal catalog comes to mind) and are not searchable.

The 313445 is/was a 95 grain PB SWC. I had a SC mould but had to bug my virtual friends all over the Internet to get the DC I now have. My 32 S&W long I-frame Smiths all seem to love it!

Does anyone load/has anyone loaded the 313492 PB WC in 32 S&W Long? I haven't been able to find any loading data for the solid base, while the swaged HBWC is loaded a lot. I assume the additional space in the base of the latter will give lower pressures than the solid base of the former, so I'm looking for guidance here.

    Froggie,

The 313492 was designed to be seated long and crimped in the small crimp groove. Loading it that way, I use data for loading SWC's of the same weight class.

If planning to seat flush with case mouth, be aware that many (not all) of the 313492 molds have a reduced diameter ahead of the crimp groove designed to allow easier chambering in revolvers with tighter throats, so there may be space around the bullet when seated deep in the case. For flush seated WC's in the 100 grain range in the .32 S&W long, I have found that 1.3 grains of bullseye is generally an accurate and mild load.

Thanks NZ, that's just the kind of info I was looking for. Now to find/modify/make a rotor with chamber that small to go in my Lyman Accumeasure or RCBS Little Dandy. Then again, since I'm shooting these loads in revolvers and don't need to seat them flush, I may be better off to go with the SWC data. I really need to decide on a standard setup that I can leave in place for these loads... I'm spending too much time setting up and tearing down.

313249 was great for stock tank ducks and ice house parking lot lights... uh, so I heard. Many years ago.

GONRA sez 31356 SPECIAL (only top 2 lube grooves) is a great bullet
(both lube grooves inside the cartridge)
for 7.62mm Tokarev pistol, 7.63mm Mauser pistol and 7.65mm French Long pistol cartridges.
(Haven't fooled around with cast boolits for decades, but looong ago,
Lyman would make simple specials such as this by pulling up the cherry whilst cutting the mold cavity
for no exta charge. Still $4.50 per mold.)

Well I'm pretty much lost. What does the second set of three numbers stand for? I have only one 32 mold. Really old, have no idea who made it. Cast's a 95gr RN bullet, it's a 313226. I got the 313 stands for 313 bullet dia,,,I think! But looking on Midway I find very few 32 cal molds at 313 dia. Most are 311 dia. Been thinking about a new mold but afraid I'll end up with an undersized bullet and get leading. The good thing about my mold, I can cast all the bullet's I need and the bullet is very accurate. Bad thing is the bullet's drop hard from the mold.

My 311316 and 3118 are both marked "311" but they drop a healthy 313, that's where I size them and loob in my machines, they get used in about 10 different revolvers and a couple 30-30 carbines.
