I picked up a Henry goldenboy a few years ago. It is a fantastic little shooter. Smooth action and I love the octagon barrel. I had a trigger job done on it and now it has a sweet trigger with no creep.
No plastic parts or painted receivers on this one.

I only wish Henry would offer the option at whatever price for a real brass/bronze receiver on their Goldenboy. I'd make sure each of my kids and grandkids get one at the appropriate birthday.

I vote for the 39A. Mines a 70's vintage, I bought new. Have shot a dime sized group(pure luck probably)at 150yds with it, shooting WW SX 22lr ammo. Cleaned it, the action, not the barrel, at around 10K rounds and it still shoots great.

I was very fortunate when a friend offered me a 39a that was in rough shape, but very reasonably priced. Turned out to have a broken firing pin and was missing the cartridge guide ramp, but for $150 and a couple bucks worth of parts it was quite the deal. Took a few itterations of filing to get the new firing pin to produce 100% ignition.

Anyhow, after getting it to function reliably and scoping it I realized what all the hype was concerning the 39a. Yes, you can outshoot it with a anshutz match rifle, but it'll hang with most any other rifle and outshoot most of them. It is also the perfect balance of being suitably light for a 22 rf rifle and fitting an adult. They have the quick followup kids enjoy, and are accurate enough for plinking at extended ranges, just because.

One of my favorite memories this summer, a long weekend camping/hiking/exploring/plinking trip with my two teenage boys. I guess I'll have to get another 39a some day as it wouldn't be fare only having one to pass down.

Really! Just think how well I'd be shooting if I had bought a Winchester or Marlin.
The Browning is as accurate as my Silhouette bolt gun, the trigger is heavy, but crisp and it has never failed to cycle/fire/be fun to shoot. I really have to take issue with your statement.
I shoot AAA class with my little Browning, and don't plan to change.

They may shoot fine?, but so do the Henry's, I REALLY! didn't care for the short lever throw and the fact that all three of them I looked at felt like they were lubed with gravel didn't help.

About a year ago a guy that works for Henry was selling them on Rimfire Cental. I got a couple http://www.rimfirecentral.com/forums...d.php?t=452603

I would throw my vote for the 9422.

-they look the most like the big bore and is still walnut and blued steel. For the kid in me it's the best most realistic pretend cowboy gun to have. The cosmetics of the Marlin just doesn't have it. The Marlins are good guns but with their own style about them. The Marlin 1894(?) cowboy .22 was a great looking gun but was too heavy for me too want it. I wanted to like it but the weight killed it.

I've had an 1981ish 9422XTR I bought used and sold. I found I don't like straight grips, I like the pistol grips that Marlin tends to use more. When they had the 9422 classic with the curved pistol grip I bought one, also happened to be the last year made.

I would buy a Marlin if i came across the right gun at the right price. So far I just see the wrong guns with too much damage or with cross bolt hammer block safeties on them or the wrong price.

ETA- I've shot the Henrys and they handle and shoot quite well, as good as many. I just couldn't stomach the zamak cast receiver, black paint, and the then plastic bits.

Ya, I know, I feel the same way about the Smith & Wesson 22A, Browning BuckMark, and many other arms made today.

I went to war to defend our 1st and 2nd Amendment (although I really don't think them little Vietnamese guys cared about our "freedom of speech"). Thanks for expressing your opinion.

I'll cast another vote for The Marlin. The only one of these I have experience with was one that belonged to my older brother. He bought it in the late 60's or early 70's. He gave it to his son when he came of age so its still in the family.

I shoot a BL22 and I'm very happy with it. It shoots more accurately than I can manage. That being said, I recently bought a 60-year old Marlin 336 in 30-30. I'm so happy with it that now I'm obsessed with getting an old 39A. Soon...very soon!

I have shot both the 94-22 and the Marlin 39a both are good guns providing they are comewhat taken care of. I bought an old marlin 39 at aution that had been a "butcher" gun most of its life. almost all corrosive shorts and never cleaned. Had a ring int he chamber at the short cases length. Long and long rifle wouldnt extract except with a knife point. Ive also worked with the 94-22 mag. Betweenthese buy what fits feels right and fits your budget you wont go wrong.

I have a 1970's Marlin 39A, and it shoots very well. But when it came time for a lever for my kids for Cowboy Shooting I went with the Henry. It is just WAY smoother and easier for them to shoot faster, and also quite a bit lighter. If we were shooting squirrels at 100 yards maybe it would go the other way, but we aren't.

You might consider a Marlin M94 in .22 WMR. If you don't like the round you might have it converted to .22 LR but I believe it to be the best .22 Rimfire lever gun going.

I've had a 39A since 1959. It's a beautifully made and very accurate rifle. However, I bought a 39 for a co-worker's retirement gift about 20 years ago and it wasn't nearly the gun mine is ---maybe it was a "Made on Monday" deal and maybe some gunsmithing would have brought it up to par: but I was disappointed.

My brother bought a new 94-22 about 15 years ago; he asked me to try to make it shoot. It was never the equal of my old 39, either. I had to scope it (which he didn't want) as the iron sights were impossible to get on target --- even then; it was less than impressive on the range. Pretty gun, though!!!

I have a 1974 made Winchester 9422 and it's hands down one of my favorite guns. Though I would be hard pressed to choose between it and a Marlin 1897 Cowboy. That is the one levergun I could trade my 9422 for.

have a full length 39a made about 1987. Says its a Goulden, but either the wrong trigger or no sign of gold left. Have put thousands of rounds thru it and its as smooth as glass. My nephew says "its the rifle that dont miss", well it will, but never her fault. Ran into a gent with a new browning, let him fondle for a minute. He commented on how much smoother than his was, and was shocked when I told him there was proboobly 5-700 rounds worth of dirt in it from the last two outings. Offered me his rifle and 100 on the spot. I still have the old 39!
