    Lyman mold

Have any of you bullet casters used the Lyman 225646 mold?

If you have, I would really appreciate your opinions on this item.

Thanks for reading my post. Rod.

I like the boolit very much. It works at 2200+ in 14 twist, and should work down through 22lr velocities in 12 twist. If you would like a mold I do not use any more, I will be glad to furnish it to you. ... felix

Thanks for the prompt reply. I have this mold already, but have not used it as yet.

I have it and used it in 2 guns. The first, my 22-250 Remington VL. Heavy barrel. This gun is a shooter with condoms. I tried this and that with the 225646 without much luck. I then sized it to 225 instead of 224. Huge improvment, now I was getting groups. I set the OAL to .010 LESS than Lyman recomends, and poof! I had groups. With 18 grains of SR4759, I can shoot 1" @ 100 yards. To do this, boolits need to be weighed to .3 grains and charges had to be weighed too. Av 2684 fps from my Crony. I will be trying it at 200 yards next week.

Other gun .... Savage Model 24V 222/ 20 guage..........Nothing.......Still nothing. One day I "bumped up" the nose and got what resembled a group at 50 yards. I switched boolits and now use a 45 grain roundnose in that gun. This savage has a loooong throat sloppy chamber and rough bumpy pitted barrel. 225646 will not shoot in this gun.

All were poured out of pure linotype.

DavidR---I also have a Savage 24V(.222)and I use the 58 grain RCBS mold--seems to shoot whatever you put in it for powder. Same bullet does well in my other .222 and in .22-250 but not in my .223.

The 225646 is a good mould. In my experiences, sometimes, it takes a little work to get to shoot accurately whereas some of the others are less finicky.

I've had best results sizing mine at as close to .226" as you can get. This may require "beagling" it up a bit. That and the use of strictly Hornady GCs and nose first sizing made it shoot for me.

It's a good bullet and plenty heavy for a cast .22 bullet. The 225415 and the 225438 are easier to get to shoot more consistently in my experience. Same as for the 22-55-SP.

The key is a large diameter and good gas checks. Don't even look at the old Ideal/Lymans...they won't stay on and that's a sure way to get fliers at 100 yards no matter what the Lyman manual says./beagle

    Carpetman,

I bet you are right, If I load the 45 grain in my 222, I can seat it so all that is in the case is the gas check and it still does not touch the rifling. Luckly they shoot well if I load them so I just cannot see any lube. I would like to try some lee liquid lube, but can't get the gas checks on in MY sizing die. The plug sits too deep, it would size at least the last band too. My chanber is huge and the throat is long.

My notes for condom boolits in that gun say "Just load 20.5 grs of 4198 and the boolit as long as you can."

    I don't have the 58 grain mold........Yet.
