How much paint per boolit?

Any ideas how much it takes to paint a boolit? The only paint I've found localy is for sealing concrete and that comes in a kit for $79. Performance between powder coating and epoxy paint looks about equal so my decision depends on which way is cheeper. Any ideas on cost per boolit or amount used per boolit?

Hard to say really. I can do about 800 electrostatic with one harbor freight container. A splash of acetone to clean before spraying, then one bake and charging up the compressor. From what I gather the epoxy requires more solvent and double or triple bake. I don't really know how much more the electricity or solvent cost would be.

I use 1 teaspoon per 1050 grams of bullets. I found that works for 124, 155, 180 grain bullets giving they are different sizes. Then do 3 coats, sometimes 2 coats is enough. Careful with the math, because if the 3 coats and you are using 3 quantities of paint, hardener, reducer. This ratio also works for powder coat and the piglet method.


I goofed, it's 1/2 teaspoon per 1050 grams of bullets.

Sounds like to my mind that powder coating with any method will be cheaper than using epoxy paint. Thanks for helping me clear that up.

Not only cheaper , but less time to cure in the oven.

yes, PC is cheaper, but my oven sucks and I've tried 2 different ones, not buying a third....lol

From what I've read, it is supposedly ideal to have a convection type oven, not one of those little toaster ovens. Supposedly convection ovens circulate the air for better baking and more even & accurate temp control.

I checked out small convection ovens at the local Walmart and they have 2 sizes. Both are under $100. They have multiple racks, digital controls and all the bells & whistles. Would prefer to find a similar one on Craig's List or something like that.

I'm really interested in bullet coating because this should eliminate the need for a lube & sizer. Just a push through sizer, from what I understand, is all that would be necessary. The price of a brand new convection oven isn't that bad if it all works out well (coating that is).

I bought the Farber oven at Walmart, it won't hold temp steady at all, and it is convection. On bake it doesn't even want to get to 400°

Well that sucks I will certainly remember to test mine when/if I get one. If it's junk it will go right back.

That's exactly what I thought. Swings from 325 to 475 on broil, but just won't get to 375 on bake.

using powdercoat machine I have done around 2k bullets and have about half a container left from harbor freight, so I would do the math at 4k per pound of powdercoat.

$5.00 per pound of powder coat from harbor freight.
$.00125 cents per round
= 12 cents per 100
=$1.20 per 1000.
=$12.00 per 10,000
=$120.00 per 100,000
=$1200.00 per million. if your doing more than that in a lifetime you have an addiction "SEEK HELP" =p
