Anybody still smelting in the summer heat?

I sell it to sinker manufacturers, reloaders, friend, ext. It's good stuff about a 10.4 bhn. From mostly jacketed bullets, all double fluxed. I plan on selling on here too. But since I'm new, I have to make 25 posts first right?

Too hot for the plumber's furnace! But I have several buckets full of clean lead channel used in leaded glass windows.

So...........I set up my little 4# Lee precision melter in front of the back shop in front of the evap and pour 3ea) 1# ingots at at time....every few mintues. That little pot really cranks the heat! But not uncomfortable to be close to. Hardly any dross to mess with because all this lead is very clean. Just add a little pea-sized piece of bees wax to reduce the solder tin back in and pour it. The little pot is light enough that I can easily pick it up WITH leather gloves and pour right over the pot lip directly into the ingot mold.

Tried about 10# of COWW's but way too messy! Those will have to wait for cooler weather and my plumber's furnace (jet engine!).

Today was casting day, 10 pound batch, 6 pounds 452 200 grain TC, 1 pound 312 160 grain, 3 pounds 356 120 grain TC. 90 degrees 80% humidity so sweat box.

95d in Mississippi but humidity is close to 110%. Smelted yesterday,,, but I like everything hot.

Well, as promised I finally did it. The heat wave broke last weekend, but we had a wedding to attend and various other things to keep me busy. Heat was right back (mid 90s, high humidity) Monday, right through Saturday. Then, like magic, low 80s and dry. So, Sunday morning I smelted out about 450-475 casting alloy ingots. That should keep me for about three years or so.

Woke up early Sunday morning and ran about 80lbs of wheel weights before the sun got up good. It's hard for me to see the range scrap and wheel weights sitting in buckets and not turn it into shiney ingots. I still have about 175lbs of wheel weights and 75lbs of range scrap to do.

I do all my smelting in an air conditioned/heated garage (yes it is well vented) and I still avoid playing with the lead pots in the summer unless I absolutely have to.

I am down to five 5 gallon buckets of sorted WW's to smelt and I still have three more buckets at the tire shop to pick up. This is the last time I put off smelting until it gets hot outside!

Smelted 480 lbs of range scrap. Ended up with better than 300 lbs ingots, about 7 gallons of copper jackets and some misc dirt, rocks and dross.

Now to tackle the 4 buckets of sorted wheelweights.

I just did a run the night before last. It was still absurdly hot, even though I waited until the sun was down. In cooler weather I may refill the dutch oven once or twice. In the heat, once was all I felt like doing.
