I am new to shotshell reloads and was wondering if anyone reloads steel shot for duck/goose hunting? if so what kind of wad can you use? there is some state run fields near my house that you have to use steel if hunting doves!

I did quite a bit of research intio loading steel last fall for ducks and geese. Wound up just using factory loads due to time constraints last season.

From what I found, BPI makes good steel wads. I bought a bag for use in the 12ga 3 1/2" shell. I also bought a pound of Alliant Steel powder. Supposed to be THE powder for steel loads. BPI sells steel shot pellets in 10 pound bags. Steel generally requires different hulls than lead loads.

Let me know what gauge and components you want to work with and I'll see what info I have.

I haven't started loading steel, I just stock up at the end of the season when the retailers don't want to carry inventory over to the next year. At the rate I'm going through Steel shells, I ought to be good for the rest of the decade

    A great group of guys
They will help you with Steel reloading just like this place will help you with cast reloading

I was shooting a 1 oz load of #5 steel at 1600 fps

    I use several
RSI Sam 1 for some 2 3/4" loads and I use the RSI Sam 1 for 3" and 3.5" for the 3" and 3.5" hulls
For the rest of my 2 3/4" loads I use a wad called 7/8 or 1 oz Cushion shot driver or TUWSBL 24 or 28 depending where you get them from

Here in Ohio any hunting done in a public wetland hunting area must be done with nontoxic shot
That means ducks, doves , pheasants and even bunnies

PM me if you need some help with steel shot reloading
