Some rifles my friend dropped by with

A good friend dropped by my house yesterday with his family. His brother-in-law had just bought a collection of some old rifles and wanted me to look at them. Actually, I suspect he just wanted to make me jealous, but that's what friends do right?

In the trunk of the van he had,
an M1 Carbine, IBM barrel, Rockola receiver..very nice with good wood. Made me remember what a piece of junk my Universal carbine really is.
an M1903 with the pistol grip stock. NOt the A1 or A2 or A3, the original. Perfect condition.
An M1 Garand. 1952 Springfield barrel, receiver, and stock. I cried

A Swedish Mauser. I don't really know that much about the Swedish Mausers but I knew I wanted this one.

A Slovokian Mauser that looked like mine but where my rifle is in about relic condition, this one was in good condition.

And two Lee-Enfields that looked very different from one another. I know just about nothing about them as well, but they were in fine shape.

Then he has the audacity to tell me that he paid about 1200 for the whole lot.
Oh, and I forgot the slovokian Mauser was a Mitchell, with all matching numbers, the stock, the bolt, the receiver, the barrel, and it had the matching bayonet and other accoutrements.

    with friends like these

The Rockola carbine is a neat one. It's on my want list to get one day.

$1200 for the whole lot? He got a great deal.

Yea, I couldn't take my eyes off of the carbine. It is my favorite gun to shoot. Not cause it's powerful, or accurate, or anything like that, it's just fun. I couldn't offer him what I thought it was worth, so I didn't bother. He got a great deal, but he didn't know how good. Maybe it helps that he's a preacher.

My carbine is my favorite gun in my small arsenal too. It's just plain fun to shoot and easy to reload with boolits.

OK, I am the friend that stopped by and I decided that Cavalrymedic and I shouldn't have to bear this burden of jealousy alone. Here are a few pics to taunt the rest of the forum. My Brother-in-law (proud owner) is the one with the huge smile on the far right of the group pic.

Well Cat , it's good to hear you are still OK . I hope he's treating you well and the dungeon isn't to uncomfortable .

That is a very nice deal your brother-in-law got , it was nice of you to let them go that cheap . Nice looking guns and it's great to see him smiling ain't it ?

Hey, isn't there a BIL tax for flaunting? Seems to me 1200 or one of the pile would cover it!
I came into this world kicking, screaming, and covered in someone elses blood. I plan to go out the same way.

The last pic shows the Lee-Enfields. Are there any experts here who can tell the difference between the two just from the picture?

The upper one is a WW2 No.4, probably Mk.I, the lower is older, the WW1 No.1 Mk.III. That's all I can say with the info provided.

that's what I am seeing too, check the left side of the recievers.
the no-4 might say us property and have a 2 groove r/h twist barrel.
I have one of those and it is by far the best shooting 303 I have ever had.
my mk-3 has a metford 4 [or is it 5] groove left hand twist.

Yep ... sure looks right. The later No. 4 will have an aperture (peep) rear sight on the receiver bridge while the older No. 1's have an open (V notch) rear sight on the barrel. They are normally dated, which will help you to figure out how old they are. The No. 1 might still be WW II era depending on it's date stamps as the Aussies and New Zealanders still used the No. 1 models in the second war ...
I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't reached my "Expiry" date!
