Small Game in Alaska (more pics)

Came up to Anchorage Alaska to teach some troops for 10 days and have this weekend off. Brought the 870 12ga and Smith 58 in .41 mag with me. I casted up some Ranch Dog TL 411-255 RF which weigh around 265-269gr straight wheel weights. Carry these in the Smith for protection. A small game non resident license only cost $20. Today went south of Anchorage to Portage Valley. I can hunt grouse, ptarmigian, hares, waterfowl, cranes and snipe on the license. Went out with the intent of hares and grouse. Managed to jump one snowshoe hare but wasn't able to get a shot off in the thick cover. Did see plenty of other wildlife to include 2 different bald eagles, 1 coyote at 50yds, 1 porcupine and 6 moose.

Panoramic veiw of Turnagain Arm. Tide is coming in and Anchorage is to the right.

Going to try again tomorrow. Next weekend back to NC.

Started in a different valley across the bay where I hunted yesterday. Went up to 1000' and saw rabbit tracks but snow was pretty deep (no snowshoes) so that kept me on a trail. Didn't see any grouse, ptartmigian or rabbits. Did see another bald eagle. Lots of people out snowmobliling so went back to the area we were in yesterday. Only seen lots of red squirrels today.

The snow shoe hares are on a down cycle. Aren't nearly as many around this year.

    Diver,

Looks to me like a good project for a team training exercise.

That is a porky pine ( porcupine). Do not pet, you will end up with a hand full of very sharp quills that don't want to come out. They are very docile as nothing will mess with them.

Porcupines spend alot of time in trees, they will eat most of the bark off pine trees, eventually killing the tree, here they are protected. I have not seen them in other types of trees, my dogs can't leave them alone, even after being "quilled" multiple times.

Did some scouting on Fort Richardson after training today. Did find one grouse and of course didn't have the shotguns with us.

    Saw more Bald Eagles today.

Other birds seen today were 2ea Sherpa's (aircraft) dropping these guys. Reminds me of my younger days. Glad I wasn't jumping today as it was 3 degrees this morning.

Glad you got to enjoy your time up here. I'm originally from NE GA and I DO NOT miss the heat or humidity, rattlesnakes, copperheads or poison ivy. I do miss turkey hunting, deer hunting and my really big garden with corn and okra growing. Safe travels home, and I hope you get to come again when you can go salmon fishing. Best in the world.
