Sounds right, you need some expansion with those little bitty boolits.

1000lb deer? Now I know why you're called "Bullshop"...

On a cold November day in 1926, Carl Lenander Jr. dropped a monstrous Minnesota buck with a single shot. Field-dressed, the deer weighed 402 pounds. The state Conservation Department calculated its live weight to be 511 pounds. No heavier whitetail deer has ever been recorded.

OLD POST< BUT IT IS GETTING THAT TIME OF YEAR

    Rcbs 35-200
    260-220 custom
    358315HP
    358315

In that order with my 35 rem premicro marlin 336's

I would not hesitate to shmuck a deer with any of them. I use primarily H4895 with em in both my 1950's 35R-336's....I have even went above and beyond into cor-bon like territory with this powder with no ill comings. I get my best accuracy in the 37-38 gr range however.

LARGE DOSES OF blc-2 HAVE PROVEN EXCELLENT ALSO, but I like the recoil pulse better with the H4895

I use an alloy consisting of water dropped 50/50 ww/pure, and am tickled with the on game performance in my 357max....impact velocities are very similar...I cannot see it being any different.

    Mike,

My Pre-micro 336 measures .3595" at the muzzle and I've got to run my pot at 800F to get bullets that measure .358" all the way around their circumference from my RCBS 35-200FN. Should I tell RCBS they need to retool? I bought this mold a couple years ago. What is the date code on your 336?

    Thanks,
    MJ

My 35-200 is plenty fat for both my 1953 straight stocked rc and my 1951 pistol gripped SC.

If you are unhappy with an rcbs product they will fix it...just about guarantee that Don.

My rcbs 200 grainer measures .3515 just ahead of the nose band to the start of the ogive and .3608 on the drive bands with waterdropped 50/50 ww/pure if memory serves.

I "squish" (highly technical term) my 358315 to similar dimensions with a flat nose right after casting, then lube a short time later in my lyman 45...works really well for me.

Years and years ago I had a micro .35. I was amazed at it's accuracy with factory or jacketed bullets, most times 1/2" at 100 yd's. But then I ran into the small boolit thing and never was able to shoot cast at any distance.
Now, with all of the knowledge from the shooters here, all the custom mold makers and my ability to make my own molds, I wish I still had the gun, just for fun because I only use revolvers now. I loved that little gun.
The best .22 I ever had was the Marlin 39 Mountie. A great gun gone the way of the Dodo too.
Marlin has turned into the Lee of the gun world with that stupid 1 in 38" twist in the .44 and the SHALLOW Ballard rifling.
The company listens to dropout pencil pushers instead of shooters.

    DJ,

If you are going to use the 357 mag, you might want to consider a 20 to 1 mix of pure lead to tin and shoot the 158 gr SWC pushing it with about 18 grs of 2400 if the rifle you are using is built tough enough to take it.

Best wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Hey Whats wrong with 20-1 ??? I bet-cha more critters have gone to the pot with 20-1 than most other bullets out there.
Last time I popped a deer with my wheel gun I did not need more than 1 shot...

+1 for the 20-1 mix. I use it for all my hunting loads in 30, 35 and 45 cal. I just cast up a couple hundred 35's and 45's this morning. The only thing that might be better is a cast soft nose, I just never seem to have the time to make any up.

I have to say the greatest is the 358627 215 gr. boolit. Of course, that's because I've cast up almost a 1000 in preparation for popping targets and deer with my .357 max, but I've never killed one with it. See, my opinion is valid too, even though I have nothing to base it on except other peoples' recommendations.

Why does the RCBS 200 work so well? It has a small meplat and it seems like the majority opinion is that you need a big meplat to kill. It also has a long nose with a small front drive band.

Can someone help me out here? I am trying to understand cast boolit design better.

    Thanks,
    Crabo

Crabo, if it is accurate, you can alter hardness to make a killer out of it. Even a roundnose works great with some expansion.
You just don't want a real hard boolit if the meplat is small or the nose is round.
I like the 20 to 1 idea for the smaller calibers.

I did hope to see more on the .357 Mag. I found a load that shoots well in my Marlin sorry not cast but the Hornady 180Gr XTP/HP with 13Gr of W296 and CCI mag primer gives me right at 1350FPS. And I get groups of 3/4 at 100 yards with that load.

Is it good enough for deer? Or just a good rabbit load.
