I've had bad luck with the less expensive Shimano reels. I had one that I paid more than $50 for, and it failed fairly early. I sent it back to Shimano and they replaced it with a newer model, a Corvalus CVL 300. That one failed as well. It's on my desk right now, with extensive corrosion bubbles beneath the finish.

On the other hand, I have a Shimano TLD 25 on my boat rod, and it has been wonderful. There have been no issues, and the reel is in fine condition.

I know that you said under $50. I've got a Shimano Sahara 2500 that I like pretty well. It is still under $100 and is a very nice reel for the money.
I use a braided line and it casts very well. Both my brothers use the same reel in tournament fishing and that is why I bought said reel. To my understanding they make a smaller version, also. Just my two cents worth.
By the way, I keep an extra spool with different line on it. Real easy to change.

I was recommended Lews by a captain at my FireDepartment. He does a ton of fishing, and uses Lews baitcasters. You can get a lot of reel for cheap with spinning reels compared to baitcasters. I'm in the market for a new one now, and can't decide between a Lew's and a Daiwa Tatula. Definitely will be using 15lb braid.

I've found Okuma reels to be smooth and durable. I'm sure you could find one in your price range...

Look for "Reels" about 2/3rds the way down the first page.
I truly believe we need to get back to basics.

    Get right with the Lord.
    Get back to the land.
Get back to thinking like our forefathers thought.

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord make His face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you
and give you His peace. Let all of the earth – all of His creation – worship and praise His name! Make His
    praise glorious!
