    300 blackout

I been shooting my SOTA 16 in 300 blkout with 147 FMJ 2400 powder at 1850 fps will not cycle. Same bullet with RL7 at 1550 runs fine. Why won't the faster load not cycle?

The 2400 probably peaks too fast and by the time it gets to the gas port the pressure is already dropping. The RL-7 is a slower powder and is still burning by the time the bullet reaches the port.

Wilson's Combat makes an infinitely throttled gas takeoff port valve. Around 80 bucks or so. ... felix

II have the lyman 300 235 mold and it recommends the slower powders.

Yet to load any as I need some stuff yet so you are further along then me.

Just going by what the instructions say ( ya I read them LOL )

Yep WRONG powder! Look at the factory data! All slow burn rate powders! Do you use Bullseye in 44 mag? Same thing run the correct powder- and you'll get correct function! IMR 4227, H110, W296, Lil'Gun, AA1680 there are some others but these are the main ones to use !

If this has been covered in a previous thread, forgive me. Have you checked the size of your gas port hole? Many are apparently drilled undersize from the factory and I had to enlarge mine to .110" to get reliable function out of it.

I agree it must be a powder issue however the date came from the Hornady Edition #9. Test rifle was a S&W M&P. So it must have functioned it that rifle. I'll look at the gas port next, (maybe) it seems to shoot the RL7 very well and works on it. May leave well enough alone.

1680 functions and runs about 2000 fps.

Yes, there are lots of light boolit combinations in 44 mag that work with Bullseye.

The Lee 230 AAC needs to be sized larger. I am going to have to beagle mine out. The mold casts fine as long as you don't drop them from mold too soon and bend them! My upper is a Model 1 sales 221/300 whisper (purchased before 300 AAC existed) with carbine gas position and std buffer. Powder is the biggest variable for cycling. I can get complete cycling with the Lee 200 or 230 at 9.5 grains using AA1680. If using 2400 or H110 have to go towards higher end of loads.

Cast boolits make this an economical round to load cast boolits in!

Yep I have the Lee 155, it's going to be my all around bullet! Got 2024fps with 16.5 gr Lil'gun but it was hard on the brass- loose pockets! Backed off to 16gr and all is good! Perfect bullet for the 300 Blk!

Thats my point light loads, light bullets ! The 147 gr is not a light load nor light bullet for the 300 blk. The use of 2400 in the blk with that bullet just isn't going to work , pressure impulse is to short cause of the fast burn rate- you'd have to be way over safe loads with it to get function in an AR. Probably work nice in a bolt gun 300 Blk!

    Gunnut,
I knew what you were saying, I just could not resist being the dissenting opinion. And... You are right. I am shooting a 300blk but with a pistol length gas tube so I can shoot lighter powders and heavy boolits subsonic and supressed. That was the only way to get the rifle to cycle fully. And I know that was not what the OP was asking about. Guess I got off subject a little. Ooops!
I was just having fun. No harm intended.
    Take care!

This 155 is seated so the GC is still in the neck. Is that where you guys seat yours, or do you use the crimp groove? What do you use for an alloy? These are just ACWW. I'm not planing on 2000 fps just looking for a shooter that will make the gun work.
    Thanks

Burr, I have exactly the same upper. Been working with the heavies so far (311299, 311365, Nd 311247). Will have to try the Lee 155. Looks like it would be a great plinking boolit.

I've been seating the Lee 155's to the crimp groove. I have plenty of room in the mag, so I might try seating them a little longer, since there's plenty of room in the magazine.

Just be careful on seating depth that you have NO CONTACT with the boolit and rifling when cycling if you are using an autoloader. It is a remote chance, but an out of battery firing is possible.
