Yikes . . . 13 and he doesn't yet have his own gun?

In reality 13 is old enough for his first gun but the final decision is yours, some young people are more responsible than others and that is something you need to decide. I was 9 years old when I got my first 22 rifle and I still have it, I'm 64 now.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with the lead.

Well, A little about him. He is autistic, He has high functioning autism. I was very afraid up untill now to get him his own gun because he seems to enjoy taking things apart, I was afraid he would try to take his gun apart as he has done with his BB gun and MANY other things. However, He recently told me he wants one so in pretty sure thats what he is getting for his birthday. Havent totally decided on a 22 or something bigger yet. Hes a BIG kid.
5'4 and 132 pounds already. I kind of want something he will have for life. My dad has his first gun, and the other 43 hes collected through the years as well.
And thank you, I am rather enjoying this forum already.

Doctorggg, I'll reply for Andrea about caliche. If you are from Central Texas you have to be famuliar with it. There is a whole lot of granite in that part of the stare and the exfoliation decomposes forming caliche. Can't grow anything in it but mesquite.

Andrea, the next time I get to Gatesville I'll be looking for you to bring some lead back with me. We had a place there in Turnersville for a while and I grew up about 60 miles from Ft. Hood.

Ken (45nut) is sometimes slow to respond so PLEASE be patient.

    As far as 22's go.
I recommend a Ruger MKII or MKIII pistol.
Get a heavy barrel maybe the 22/45
    something like -> http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=326716638

Every shooter needs to own a 22lr pistol.
Its very cheap to shoot and even though it may not be the pistol you carry or use for protection it still provides the needed experience when it comes to hand/eye/target

I feel for your son. I also have GERD. I had my stomach tied around my esophagus to prevent throat cancer and dental decay.I take 2 Nexium 40mg pills a day. Plus Rolaids.

The constant reguration of acid especially during the night when the salivary flow is down is causing the frequent decay. Especially the back teeth. The decaying baby teeth will not do harm to the permenant teeth. But the acid will.I would try to get him to sleep on 2 pillows. Also a fluoride rinse before bed.

I wish there was a magical cure but there isn't. I'm not sure why the 3 dentist will not repair his teeth. Either it is due to the meds you mentioned or they don't want the risk. I truly recommend a good pedodontist if there is one in your area. When his permenent 6 year molars come in I would highly recommend sealants. Good Luck Gregory

I almost bought some of your lead on ebay, but by the time I had the funds, it had already sold. I'm glad to see you here!

If your son's into precision shooting, I would suggest a rifle. The Ruger 10/22 is an awsome rifle with plentiful modifications available for it. If you wanted, you could buy every single part for it online, sort of like an ar-15. I like to say it's a kid's lego gun, much like the ar-15 is considered the adult lego gun. The 10/22 takedown is also very nice if you're into hiking or camping as a backpack gun. It's easy to disassemble and reassemble and can be put into small spaces.

Andrea, I still have my first gun a single shot 410 shotgun. It was given to me for my 9th birthday. I still have it due to its sentimentality.I'm 58 now.

My suggestion might be to buy him an inexpensive 22 single shot. There isn't much he can take apart and it greatly reduces the chances of an accidental discharge as with a semi auto. Of course the final decision is ultimately yours. I would have to base it on his maturity.

I started my son shooting at age 5. He became very good at sporting clays by age 12. He could beat the average adult. He was always mature for his age. He killed his first squirrel at age 6 with a single shot 22.
He has loved shooting ever since but isn't into hunting very much. He is very proficent with any firearm. He is almost 29 (in March).

By the way welcome to this forum. It is the best. People with much more experience than I have with boolits are eager to share their knowledge.

Doctor, How old are they when thier permanant molars come in? He turned 10 yesterday and hasnt really lost many teeth. I will try the 2 pillows trick, Hopefully it works. He takes 30 mg of prevacid solutabs a day, plus around 11 other meds. He was born blue and has long term affects if that says anything.

Savingprivateyang, I have some listed right now, 1 lot left and about to list 2 more.

Doctor, I think a .22 it will be. Still have do more research. A good friend of ours here in Texas owns a range, So I think we will take him and let him handle a few different ones and see what "feels right". And caliche is exactly what Cmemiss said. Although I am not from here and im just a temporary transplant, It is really thick dirt almost like clay. But it washes off the bullets easy, Just not out of my truck very well.

Cmemiss, Hopefully you can get some before we leave. My husband will be starting the process to medically retire here soon, He is a combat vet and came back with alot more then he left with if ya know what I mean. We will be moving to Kentucky (probably around end of 2013 early 2014) and if all goes as planned we want to open a indoor range when we get there.

Normally the first molars come in at age 6. But the textbooks say 6-9 is normal. They come in behind the baby teeth so the child doesn't loose a baby tooth to get his first permanent molars.

I have a nephrew who has a severe form of autism. At age 13 my sister just took him to Children's Hospital where they put him to sleep and pulled all (8) of his "baby molars" They wouldn't come out and were holding his permanent teeth from erupting. There are 20 baby teeth. The 4 front teeth on the top and bottom usually are in by age 7-8. My nephew had to have his 8 baby molars extracted. He did get his upper and lower anteriors by age 10. This child is functioning in about the 3-5 year old range and his future doesn't look promising.Good luck, that's why your child needs a specialist (pedodontist) to monitor his teeth.

First, welcome. I will be one of the ones purchasing some lead if the price is right.

Second, it's only said on the western side of the state. Along w/ pop instead of soda. Two more regional dielects, this time from the other side of the state, that drive me nuts. Just talked about this type of thing in another thread.

Andrea, I am the rifle instructor for my county's 4H Shooting Sports Club. We have 45 kids ages 9-19 that shoot .22 rifle. We had an autistic kid join a few years ago that eventually became one of my better shooters. With proper instruction, autistic kids can handle firearms just fine. Only YOU will know when he's mature enough to have his own gun and be able to take it out on his own.
Please look into a 4H shooting sports club in your area. 4H is the largest shooting sports organization in the country. Let me know if you need any help.

I highly recommend a bolt action .22 rifle as a first rifle. It will teach him to choose his shots carefully and not waste ammo just blasting away. I'm fond of CZ rifles myself, and that's what all of my top shooters use.

Andrea, 13 is getting a bit old to just be getting that first 22 rifle.
My grandaughter was born Jan 3rd, 2013, and she already has a pink Crickett 22 rifle! I can't wait til she gets tall enough to see over the bench.

You are less than an hours drive from us, we live in Round Rock.
Welcome to the forum, you are going to meet a lot of very nice and very smart folks here.
AND sell a lot of lead!

Andrea, welcome to an internet home. It is for me, anyway. You and your husband have been welcomed here, and we look forward to doing business with you. When you move to Kentucky I hope your business continues from your own range.

Autism is hard to deal with, and the uniquenesses of the high functioning autistic can be especially problematic. You don't know what he will be interested in doing from moment to moment it sometimes seems. He gets fascinated with something and any interruption results in an eruption. Relationship seems impossible, and is if you insist on one on your conditions. They have great potential but helping them achieve anything seems an exercise in frustration, yours and his. Add to this his physical issues and all the MD visits and you have a busy life just with him. It is hard to keep a balance sometimes.

A good therapist who understands autism can be a great help. We can also just be another doctor's visit in an already busy schedule. Seems like everything is double edged, doesn't it?

as you have noticed this sight is about more than casting boolits.
we have a section called our town where stuff like this [not the lead]
    is discussed continously.
    it's what happened today/yesterday/tomorrow.
what the kids, cats, dogs, mule, car, wall socket, electrical panel, trailer, is doing or did do.
recipes, snowstorms, trips, and general poking fun at each other.
iv'e watched kids grow up in that section from babies to first day of school,to others graduating h/s and college, marriage announcements, and bad news from others.
it's what makes this place a bit different.
the thread drifts are what make it great.

This place is definately a aquired taste. I have honestly hated since I got here. I am so not used to rude snobby people and there are alot of them here. They see NY plates, or my army wife sticker on my truck and think oh, a foriegner. Had one lady see my EMT logo (Yes, I am a NYS EMT and Firefighter, currently not praticing) and she asked me to look at her daughters stitches. Not that it was a problem and I was glad to help her, But she just so happened to be the same lady that had allowed her child to throw his chewing gum of my truck a few exits back. Annoying. I cant wait to get to kentucky to say the least. People there are just so nice. Not everyone here is bad, But id definately say half the state is just plain rude!
