    Question SR-4759 & 357 Magnum...

Now this may sound irresponsible, but it really isn’t…

    I am shooting SR-4759 in a 357 Magnum and a 358429 boolit…

Does anyone have data for this combo or at least for a 170+ cast…

The load I am shooting works well in an 1894C but it is compressed…

I know I found the recipe someplace but I don’t know where—I also know that I did not just dream about it and decide to try it…

Anyone have minimum/maximum data from a published source?...

Or, does anyone else use this powder with the 357 Magnum?...

    Thanks…BCB

No problem, as you already suspect. Powder is too slow to cause problems unless ignition is severely faulty to begin with. If a SEE ever begins in a revolter, it dies as the offending wavefront(s) deflates in the crack. However, always make sure the boolit exits the gun, no matter what. ... felix

    Sr4759 358429

    Lyman Cast Boolit Handbook has:

    SR4759 358429 4" barrel

    9.8 gr. 942 fps 18,400 CUP

    13.5 gr.* 1206 fps 40600 CUP

    * Compressed powder charge.

This was in the "old Lyman Loading Manual, the information is not included in the new one.

Except for some new listed chamberings, the older manual is MUCH better

    Thanks guys...

    I am shooting 13.0 grains...

I looked in the most recent Lyman Cast Boolit Handbook, but not listed there...

Didn't look in the older ones...

Or maybe I should look in the new one again?...

    Thanks...BCB

Actually, I am shooting it from a Marlin 1894C...

I'm getting just a tad less than 1600 fps...

    Surprisingly, very little...

Just some gray streaks that I can see at the muzzle end...

Boolits are cast from wheel weights...

This is a micro groove barrel by the way. I don't know if that matters or not...

Shooting 4759 in a new Ruger 77/357.After the first shot is high and to the left,it settles down and will shoot 1" groups at 50 yds. I shoot the RCBS 357/180 Sil over 11 grains of 4759. The load was in "Castpics"

Hey I found this old thread. I realize SR 4759 has been discontinued. But I have some, and I've been loading 170 grain SWC's in my 357 rifle with very, very good results.
I'm thinking of trying it with some 105 grain boolits in the rifle but haven't been able to find any data. Just wondering if by chance anyone would have any experience with this powder in the 357 magnum.
All my projectiles are powder coated.
    Thanks.

Sknhgy, thanks for pulling up this old thread. I enjoyed reading the posts of the former members.

Yep 10-12 years ago the seniors here were really special. For instance Felix worked in/with a powder company and could answer technical questions with amazingly few words. We still have some jewels who post knowledge gained from participating in the real world. But they are thinning out.

As to your question, no I haven’t shot 105 grain boolits in a 357 rifle with SR4759.
As to the answer, post back and let us know how it goes.

I do have some SR4759 and some 100 grain boolits suitably sized for 357. But I don’t have any 357 rifles. My suspicion is you could work up a load with SR4759 that would drive that lightweight boolit really fast. Probably fast enough to need a gas check. I just don’t have a need for that type of load and so I haven’t gone in that direction.

There’s an outside chance the primer might unseat the little lightweight boolit before the charge ignites. That could be like firing with a bore obstruction. But….it might not happen. SR4759 is not know for ignition problems like spherical powders in that range of burning speed.

I've still got a little aluminum tub of Felix lube - that he personally made and sent to me - stashed away.

A tear is running down my cheek as I reread this. For years IMR 4759 was my favorite powder for my 32-40 rifle cartridges behind bullets from 165-200 gr. I used the same charges and bullets both in fixed rounds for events like the Ram Bash and breech seated for Schuetzen offhand matches with my various high walls. I bought up what I could find when they were discontinuing it and have enough lest for the Schuetzen events I’m liable to make it to, but I can’t be as indiscriminate shooting it as I used to be.
