I have had decent results loading WC860 under 150 grainers in the .270 WBY. However, it was far more temp sensitive than anything else I've used. Well over 100 fps difference from 20 deg F to 80 deg F. Just something to keep in mind.

Pretty sure there is a mix up somewhere in that because 7383 is very definitely not your typical single base IMR stick propellant. Which exact book are you referencing so I can look into it further. I am wondering if maybe there is some confusion with 7828.

I just got off the phone with Mike at the Hodgdon plant. I asked him if he had any knowledge about this powder. The only source of documentation he had came from Cartridges of the World, 11th Edition.

I have the 12th edition and looked it up. Below is what I found.

Grady, can you photograph the page and put it up for us? I'd really like to read it.

sg, My work with IMR 7383 in the .30-06 and .243Win. with jacketed bullets shows it to be a tad slower than IMR 4350.

Yup. I've been seein' the suggestion to use 4350 data for this powder since I was introduced to it a little over ten years ago.

Looks like I could use my 7383 to load for the '03A3. Not sure from what I read if I would want to use that powder in the 338 Lapua or 30-378 Wby, may have to use one of the other surplus powders for those.

I've worked up several loads for .30-06 with 7383. And some other mid size case calibers, too. There's a good bit of data under the 7383 pages on Castpics.

Thanks Grady. Looks like another myth(mystery) solved. I too have loaded 223 to 7mm Rem Mag with it, and just about everthing inbetween, still shoot it in 30/40 Krag.

Thanks, Wheeler! Man, that triple based myth has been on the books for a long time!

My question now is, is it 7383 or 4831 they used in the spotter/tracer? If it was 4831, where did 7383 come from?

    What a can of worms!

The 7383 was used in the 50 cal spotter tracer rounds-M48A1 and M48A2, and in the practice round-T249E2.
IMR-4831 was/is used in the HPT cartridge-T251, and Incendiary cartridge-M23.
The above information taken from TM 43-0001-27, dated June 1981.
