    Custom Built Rifle Cleaning Stand...

My Father-In-Law built me a rifle cleaning stand after my lack of skill could not. I found the basic design in, Professional Gunsmithing, by Walter J. Howe:

I have some rubber I bought by the foot from a roll at Lowes that I am going to tack on the bottom to prevent skidding.

Unfortunately, the Remington 1100 did not come with the stand

Looks like Pecan or Beech, one of the woods I'd choose due to being very heavy, attractive, and inexpensive compared to many other common hardwoods.

    Give him my compliments.

What I especially like about the stand is the ability to lower the muzzle of the weapon so that cleaning solvents run out the muzzle instead of back into the action. Nice design, and beautiful work.

Can I be so presumptuous as to make a suggestion.
The rear support that holds the but of the rifle. Drill some holes closer to the front support so you can use the stand for pistols also.
I wanted to post some pictures of my stand but the wife is gone for the weekend.

We discussed the option of adding extra holes for the support at some point. Great idea.

I upgraded my Father-In-Law's cleaning stand design by adding small metal plates (cut from metal from a scrapped printer with tiny screws from a scrapped VCR) to keep the tightening bolts from biting into the wood, and threaded hooks (from Big R: $2.14 total) to replace the original bolts that required a screw driver to tighten.

Very nice, but I almost wish I hadn't seen it as my wood working is less skill than evil power to destroy wood. It'll probably be cobbled from plywood scraps and what's laying around the garage. Your FIL does very nice work, thanks for sharing.
Is this a......what day is this??

That is really nice! I wanted to build a stand for cleaning rifles but knowing my lack of woodworking skills, I bought an MTM stand. Works great but the aesthetics of plastic leave a lot to be desired.

I tried to bud it myself which resulted in several pieces of crooked glued together plywood. Then I asked my Father-In-Law to build me one

This is my quick and dirty solution.

I'd love to make a bespoke rifle cleaning vice and I have the skill to do it, but never the time. And with the amount of cr*p already in my shed, anything which can be dual purpose is a bonus.

The only thing I need to do it to improve the piece of wood for the fore end; you need to be careful when unclamping the benchtop that it doesn't fall through. I reckon a couple of holes drill across it and a piece of dowel to set the height should stop that.

The orange plastic pipe just happens to be the right size to fit in the workbench top holes, so it clamps pretty tightly.

Overall, it actually works much better than expected.
