I got a cow elk tag and I really want to use my 357 herret in a 10" contender. Last year the only shot I got on a buck was 240y so I used my rifle. I had my Blackhawk but I'm only solid to about 150y with that. But this year I think its Pistol or nothing. I may bring my 45colt levergun with my 340g casts but that would be my only rifle.
I developed a really nice 180g condom load with the Sierra tourniment master on for my last hog hunt and it shoot great to 200y. I'm going cast and looking at a few 180-200g moulds.
Ranchdog's 190 is at the top of the list since i want a wide front section. Mountainmoulds are a possibility too but that lead time is cutting it close.
I know I can get 1950fps out of a 180g Tourniment master, and 2000+ with an equal cast.
I'm starting to hate the TKO calculator that shows this load only dropping 8" at 200 yards but losing 50% of its energy. I know what a 180g core-lok does to a 6x6 bull at 1200fps. Its broke two veribrea, drove another 15"+ and lodged someplace in the guts. TKO says this much energy is only good for coyotes So I'm not doing the math any longer and hoping some of you have shot Elk with a 357 Herrett. What ranges, shot types, moulds, etc.?
I've had the barrel about 3 years now and its my favorite even over my 7-30 barrel. It loves 125-225g. I shoot it quite a bit so I wont be shy about shots in the 150-200y range if the enrgy is there. After I get a load together I'm goig to take a stack of phone books out for testing and cap my effective range. I just need to settle on the mould.
Thanks guys.
