250/270 Grain Boolits In 45 ACP or 45 AR?

hey guys.

i just picked up 625-4 and love this gun. i have some 255 grain and 270 grain boolits from ZIPTAR and would love to try them out.

just picked up some .45 ar brass to keep my loads separate from my 1911

i was wondering if i can use Win 231 with the boolits? does anyone have official load data?

i've seen some listed on forums and some ramblings here and there but it seems like most people are using slower powders.

should i just go out and get some more powder and forget the 231?

i'm scared i'll like how the heavies shoot and and need to buy a new boo lit mold! oh no!

either way i can't wait to try some 45 AR brass out. load books are very conservative on loads for the .45 AR it seems. i was comparing notes on hodgdon vs a speer manual on the speer seems very conservative on a lot of things.

Only load data I found in a cursory check of 6 loading manuals was 5.4 grains of WW-231 under a 260 grain boolit for 754 fps. I'd start at 4.9, and go up a little at a time.

I have a couple of 625's (a 625-6 Model of 1989 with 5" barrel and a 625-8 JM Special with 4" barrel) that I shoot more than any of my other revolvers.

My most shot load is a Mihec clone of the #68 H&G SWC ahead of 4.0 grs of Bullseye or equivalent. My current powder is Titegroup although I have used 5066, Dupont PB, and 231 with excellent results.

My heavy bullet load is a NOE clone of the LYman 454424 that weighs 250 grs (Keith) out of my alloy (WW's+2% tin). I load 7.0 grs of Unique behind this bullet and it chronographs 900+ fps. This is a "not necessarily recommended load" but is safe in my revolvers. It should be used with discretion.

Brian Pearce has data in a Handloader magazine with the RCBS 45-270-SAA (it really weighs 280-285 grs). Brian uses 6.0 grs of Unique with that heavy bullet. If you want a copy of that article, send me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you by attachment.

My two loads for the .45 AR are very close to Dale53's. I have a 625 Mountain Gun (pre-lock) with which I've killed a bunch of Texas deer.

1. 255 Keith SWC; 6.5 grains Unique; WW LP Primer; Starline brass (the only brass to use in this caliber, IMO)
2. 240 Keith SWC; 7.0 grains Unique; WW LP Primer; Starline brass

Both of these shoot lights out in my revolver and kill deer very cleanly.

So I subscribed to loaddata.com to see some more suggestions.

Looks like universal clays is a great powder for hight velocity loads in 45 acp from 200 grains to 280 grains.

I'm going to grab some of that to try.

I did load some between 4 and 4.6 grains of 231 per lee load data on loaddata.com for a 255 grain boolit.

Those are some of the ones I have saved to my favorites and they should give you a good bit to read. I use the Lyman 454424, 454190 over a 6.5 grains of Unique in my two 45 ACP N frames with no problems. Stout but not too bad for the 25-2 and reworked 28-2 I have.

I ran 150 rounds of the Lee 452-255-RF through my SR1911 this afternoon and it cycles them fine but I think my charge was a bit light perhaps. I was loading 4.0grs of bullseye, and while recoil was pleasant POI was a good bit lower than POA. I'll have to read through those links and see what I can glean, ultimately I'll just have to listen to the gun though lol.

ok so the hot loads ran great!

5.6 grains of universal clays was as hot as i wanted to go for testing and it was awesome!!

the 270 grain somewhere around 850 is sweet! i loaded some 255s but they were light and wimpy in comparison.

i don't think i would feed the gun a steady diet of the high end loads but its nice to know i can load them that way if i wanted to. great backpacking gun.

i really want a 629 now!!!!
