24 gr of PROMO??? I stopped at 20 gr because it seemed kind of warm according to my shoulder. I guess I can keep going up then.

    Ajay:

Looking back at your post #27 with the 0.678" RB in the wad, what sort of accuracy are you getting in the rifled barrel?

Have you tried that combination in rifled choke tube?

    I do like round balls!

Still working on my smoothbore slugs and made some more mould modifications yesterday. I have both wad slugs and full bore to test out... but I still do like round balls!

If my new slugs perform well to 100 yards then I stop experimenting. If they don't then I have to bite the boolit (or ball) and buy a rifled barrel or get busy and make a rifling bench to produce a slow twist rifled choke tube specifically for RB's or "square" slugs.

I will have to filter through all these posts again too. Lots of good load data you guys are putting out.

Hello Brother Newcastter, your pictures show the destructive power that one needs to see to believe in, very impressive power!

    Thank you.

Brother LongBow, I've admired your creativity all along and you have helped others in your own gentle way, I had about a year back packed a box to be shipped to you but could not send it due to restrictions, I keep picking out the pieces from your box and shipping them to others from time to time and the box still has some more goodies left!

The good thing about having a rifled barrel is not having to worry about my push through test, which is only for smooth bore shooters.
Life is short Brother , go ahead and buy yourself a rifled barrel and call it a day.

I will be glad to see you happily smile with a rifled barrel gun, if you can find one locally, my Super Blazing Sabot will gladly contribute $ 60 towards it, I'll be smiling too to see my brother smile!

Nothing wrong with that, I get packages in the mail, full of surprises too.
Recently my Brother Brian Emerson Capps, who is a dear friend at my FaceBook Super Blazing Sabot home page went out and bought a hard to find Williams Rifled barrel attachment that simply gets screwed in front of a smooth bore barrel and sent me.
The accuracy is good and you get to increase your range and all your beautiful slugs that you made will turn around and smile too at you.

Kebco has a longer version of rifled choke tube of some 7 inch to convert your shotgun into a Paradox, please check from them!

Thanks for the offer Ajay. I am stubborn and still trying to get "rifle accuracy" from a smoothbore. Not really, I would be happy with anything consistently under 8" at 100 yards these days and ecstatic with groups under 6" at 100 yards.

I have a few more tricks up my sleeve before I toss in the towel, sleeve, whatever.

My real goal here was to find "decent' slug accuracy to 100 yards so I could make a poor man's double rifle out of a side by 12 ga. using slugs. I was about to say it is not easy to add rifled choke tubes to side bys but with internal tapped muzzles I guess not that hard. However, I still think a slow twist is better than what is available off the shelf. Certainly a real double rifle is not on my menu!

One way or another I will get there.

Considering loading shotgun for tactical shotgun and 3gun matches next year. 20"Mossberg 500 cylinder bore.

Any decent Unique loads for the Lee slugs that are lower recoil? I stock Unique for pistol but I guess with the lower amount needed I could always splurge for another powder.

25 grains of Unique for the one ounce and 30 grains for the 7/8 ounce.

I am trying the clear duster wads with my 7/8 oz slugs they fit better than the claybuster. Have not shot them yet but should be better I hope.

    Hi there!

I'm in the UK and have some wads that appear to be the same as the Commander wad. The 7/8 slug fits in wad fine. However, when I check the wad and slug together they seem very tight through my most open choke. I think it is too tight and so am reluctant to fire the combination of this wad and the 7/8 slug through my gun as fear of causing damage to the gun. Would the wad give at all when passing through choke? How tight is too tight? I'm using a Hatsan escort with the skeet choke. In the UK rifled shotguns are illegal so have to shoot through smoothbore. Any advice would be helpful thanks.

    Jakeeboy:

    Welcome to the forum!

Your Lee slugs will be fine if cast from soft lead. In fact they should be safe even if shot through a full choke. My Lyman Foster slugs obturate to fill the bore and have been shot through my I/C choke at 0.710" with no problems at all (not accurate but no problems). Again, they are designed to be shot through up to full choke without damage to the gun as are factory Foster slugs. Not exactly sure how things would go if they were cast from wheelweights but I think ACWW would be okay (my opinion only) where heat treated or harder alloys likely not.

As a general rule of thumb it seems acceptable for the slug/wad combo to be as much as 0.003" over choke diameter. I have not tested this but have shot some very tight slug/wad combos through my cylinder bore barrel and 0.737" round balls through my 0.730" bore gun with no signs of excess pressure. Skeet choke is only 0.005" restriction so not very tight. What is the mic'd OD of the slug/wad combo? What is the mic'd ID of the choke at the muzzle?

If the slug/wad combo mikes larger than the choke by more than 0.003" you might try pushing one through the choke using a dowel and mallet to see just how much force it takes. I suspect it will tap through quite easily.

Is your gun fixed choke or screw in choke tube? If fixed choke you could use a brake cylinder hone to open up the choke a bit or even to cylinder bore. If screw in choke tube a cylinder bore tube would be inexpensive to buy.

I thought slugs were illegal to own in the UK?

Welcome! I have had excellent success with the 7/8 lee, a 20 ga. then a 16 ga. 1/8" hard card in bottom of trap commander wad over 35 gr HS-6 powder out of remington hulls. Their book loads call for 38 gr but I get wad damage and huge recoil with that much. Best results for me are from Imp Cyl barrel.

PS: I sure miss Ajay's input here. Hope he's doing well.

Yeah, he seems alright. I got hold of him recently. I tried PM'ing him and even though he is banned it went through so he e-mailed back and we had a couple of exchanges. I miss him too, he posted lots of good info and was very helpful to anyone who asked. He said he wasn't doing much slug shooting anymore or at least casting. He was fun!

Hah! He put a box of goodies together for me and was going to send it but found out that Homeland Security has rules about exporting gun related "stuff" especially brass and boolits so he never sent them. It was sure nice of him to offer though and try.

On that note, I still have some of the zinc "weights" you sent and plan another attempt at use in a smoothbore but I plant to "Fosterize" the next batch. The last batch didn't fair well as Brenneke style with attached machined polyethylene wads. Balance point seemed good but they were very long and turbo1889 posted info on slug length indicating that much more than 2:1 ratio is bad. I have to think that would be due to turbulence or shock wave upsetting something that is nose heavy but not long enough like an arrow.

I will also save some for my rifled choke tube tests when I finish... after I make a steady rest.

Hey, drifting even further off topic here... have you ever tried 0.678" RB's in your rifled gun? If so how was accuracy? If not do you want me to send some? I am curious how well they shoot in a rifled gun.

And, do you have a 0.735" RB mould? If so have you tried those in your rifled gun? If not do you want me to send some? I'd like to know how well they shoot at 100 yards or so. I only got to test at 50 yards and no longer have access to a rifled gun. Anyway, I'd be happy to send some for testing. I do like round balls!

I better not hijack anymore here. Sorry.

Hey LB, yes I did shoot some of the .735 RB from rifled gun per Leadhead 500 (he hasn't been on lately either) and they shot great out of rifled gun but I didn't shoot them at 100. Huge recoil though at his loading levels. I have not shot the .678s. Just wait until you see Uncle Dino's latest creation, you will flip! I'm working a good bit just now and hunting every chance I get so doing minimal shooting at the moment. And speaking of AJ, he put us onto those trap commander wads with the perfect size shotcup for many wad type slugs. And the Helix cushion driver 18 that has the same cup but shorter and stouter for heavier loads. Those pics of his were a great tutorial.

My prob is wads sticking into base of bullet. I had some flyers that had the wad sticking into the cardboard target and one through the target. I thought about a shot card under the slug but thought I would defeat the purpose of the drive key. When I dropped the charge, the problem seemed to go away, and the wads are not getting as tore up, but Its still grouping poorly. Using an 870 with the Rem rifled barrel.

Gotta have the hard card! In the trap commander wads pictured above, use 1-20 ga. first, then 1-16 ga as the wad is slightly tapered and the 20 fits perfectly in the bottom. 2 - 20 ga will work but is slightly smaller than the base of the slug and will occassionall get off center.

PS All the lee recommended loads seem too hot, and like you I had better results with backing off a few grains.

    Hal:

Have you got the Lee 1 oz. or just 7/8 oz. slug moulds? I know you posted really good results with the 7/8 oz. slugs.

I made a jig to add an attached wad to my 1 oz. Lee slugs and it helped with smoothbore accuracy but was still not as good as plain old round ball to 50 yards. I didn't play with it much though.

Yes, those 0.735" RB's tend to boot a guy. They are fairly heavy at 580 grs. though not super heavy weights but if you push muzzle velocity the butt pushes your shoulder too!

I like to keep slug weights in the 1 to 1 1/4 oz. range both because there are lots of load recipes and also because they do not recoil as much. Ajay seemed to lean towards faster and lighter slugs vs heavy slow slugs. Not sure what the trajectory difference is between say a 1 1/8 oz. slug at max pressure and velocity vs say 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 oz. slug at same safe pressures and lower velocity.

Greg likes slow and heavy due to greater penetration potential and has demonstrated his 1000 gr. slug at the Linbaugh seminar. I think solid slugs of any type will penetrate better than hollow base and hard round balls should do very well but not sure how a fast 0.678" RB would compare to Greg's slug. I am thinking for practical purposes the round ball will do whatever is needed.

I have not run tests with Lee Drive Key slugs but have read that if cast from hard alloy they penetrate much better than Lyman Fosters or other plain HB slugs. Of course if cast from soft lead most Foster slugs have little nose support so they flatten out easily. Personally I like the idea of the drive key as it supports the nose and helps keep wads out of the hollow base. I have had better results with my Lee 1 oz. slug than Lyman Fosters by far. Some of my home made slugs have out performed both though.

Glad to see this topic resurrected. I have been obsessing over loading some lee slugs with Unique but not wanting to do a blind test because the reloading manuals have put the fear of God in ever straying from a published recipe. But seeing some of the loads that people have safely run, and more importantly, somebody making up the weight with a flattened buckshot to so you're not running an unplublished load of 7/8 oz payload in a 1 1/8 oz wad, really made my day.

If you are experienced, life would be boring without load development. Be smart. Stay away from the red-line and work-up your loads. Enjoy the process, but be smart about it.

I have not been able to get the 1 oz to shoot with any degree of accuraccy. I've bought a couple hundred and tried every combo you can think of, rifled or smoothbore. The 7/8 out of a trap commander shot from IC barrel is a different story. As for penetration, there's no animal in the southeast these things won't go through. The "key" keeps them remarkably intact, even in a pine tree. I've shot several hogs, no real big ones though, that were no obstacle, did shoot a 200 + pounder at 30 yds in the left eye and blew the back of his head out but that close doesn't really tell you much. Gotta have the hard card or it gets a plastic enema. 2 is better.

    This^^^^^^^^

A number of the ammo companies look to the wildcatter to get idears from to begin their development for marketing. Back in the 50s and 60s why do you think they made Mossberg and Marlin bolt action 36" full choke barrels for, goose hunting. Those guys back then are the ones that put corn flour, flour, corn meal and the such in their lead 2s and bbs to drop birds up to 80 yds up in the sky. It really closed up those patterns. The ammo companies developed the buffer material used in a lot of the shelf ammo available today. That's back when they used to call it sky busting, because that's what they did. Even though there were probably a few that were so high that if they did get one it would have spoiled by the time it hit the water or field on the way down. A lot of factory ammo is just adopted wildcat developments. Metallic and shotshell alike
May you hands be warmed on a frosty day.
