best cast boolit for swiss 1911 rifle

Yesterday, I walked into a pawn shop and noticed a Schmidt-Ruben 1911 rifle in the rack. Price wasn't too bad ($260), and it has a very good bore and no one has messed with it. It followed me home. Boy is that thing long and heavy! I pitty the poor Swiss soldier that had to carry it on a long march.

I slugged the bore and it mikes .307 groove diameter and .298 land diameter. The nose on my trusty Lyman 311291 mikes .300. That seems a little tight for a bore rider design. I also have an old Lyman 311466 that should work if sized to .309. I was wondering if anyone has a recommended cast boolit for the Swiss 1911? I would like to stay with Lee or Lyman moulds. My target shooting is done at 100-200 yards. I don't intend to shoot anything other than paper and metal targets.

I just ordered 100 Privi cases from Graf's and am looking forward to shooting this rifle.

Thanks for any information on bollit molds that may be best suited for the Swiss 1911.
    Jeff

    Congrats on the good buy...

I also just picked up a 96/11 swiss and am curious of what other swiss rifle guys on the board have to say about shooting cast in these old great rifles.
I also want to shoot paper and steel at mild velocities.

My 96/11 (1903 mfg, 1913 upgrade) really likes the Lee 311-200-1R sized .311 and loaded into Privi brass over 30.5 gr H4895 with a dacron fill. Except for the Privi brass, this is the same load I shoot in my K-31, using cases formed from .284 Win. (the 96/11 extractor doesn't grab the smaller rim of the Win. cases reliably, so I keep those separate for use in the K31)

Off sandbags, my 96/11 will print consistent sub-2" 100M. groups (iron sights), and I have no problems keeping everything in the black of a standard MR-52 (11" bull) @ 200M shooting from an unsupported 'military prone.' Pic is a 100M target shot a couple weeks ago. C-t-C spread for 10 shots is slightly under 2" with the 'best 5" going into just over 1 1/4".

Bill, Nice shooting! If I can do nearly that well with my Swiss 1911 (1918 mfg), I'll be happy. I'm anxious to see how she does on the range. Thanks for the info.
It's good to correspond with fellow cast boolit shooters. Tactical and long range rifle are the big interest at our club.

Just got my k31 to the range today for the first time!

What a pleasant surprise! The bolt is like glass - slick, and I can't feel the difference between ejecting a fired case and loading a shell and working the bolt on an empty magazine. The trigger is NICE!

I shot a russian mosin and a finnish m76 target/sniper mosin next to it, and there was no comparison. I shot a romanian psl with scope alongside the iron sighted k31 and got about the same group size for both.

Thanks for starting this thread. Now that I've emptied some loaded prvi partisan I'll be looking for cb loads as well.

    Best regards,
    DrB

I have pretty good luck with Lee C312-155 sized .311 and 15.8Gr of 2400 powder in PPU brass.

On average that gives me about 2 inch group with few fliers(I only visually inspect those boolits ).

One problem is that shots land about 12-16 inches above POA at a 100 yrs.

the rcbs 150 fngc does very good in the 98/11 it has a bit more throat than the k-31.
i use the rcbs 165 silhouette in the k-31 and have used it in the 11.
the 311041 works real well in the 11 but i let the closing of the bolt deep seat the boolit, i was initially worried about that till i seen the 50 yd groups.
16-18 grs of 2400 will shoot very well.

I have a 1915 manufactured G1911 that slugs at .299X.309. The Lee C312-155 and Lee 160 SIL shoot extremely well with 14.5-16.0 gr. SR4759, average 2" groups at 100yds. I have recently started playing with the Lyman 311332 and NOE314299 and SPP210 powder with best load at 20 gr. All boolits are checked and sized to .311 and coated with JPW/alox. I added a tall sight acquired from Guisan on the Swiss rifle site for as issue CBA shooting. For load development I use a 4X pistol scope on a modified Darrell's scout scope mount made for a K31.

A lot off great info. Thanks...

runfiverun, There is a fine line on seating for closing the bolt on those swiss guys.

chuebner, I like the idea of the higher front sight.

Proud K-31 owner here. Mine slugged the same as your K-11.

I started with the Lee 312 155gr spitzer sized to .309 and while it shoots well, I'd have to thump the bolt closed with my palm due to the short throat. The Lee 312 185gr sized to .309 was even worse.

Frustrated, I bought the NOE .311 K31 mold, 180gr borerider sized to .309, and WOW. Feeds beautifully and easily, accurate as all hell, and I am a happy camper. With water-dropped lino, I've pushed it to 54k PSI and approx 2750 FPS without leading.

Be warned, though, a K-31 is not the same critter as your rifle. With the locking lugs in the back, limit yourself to the original 47k PSI (3200 atm).

If you want to try the NOE boolits, I'll trade you 2:1 for lino or 3:1 for clip on WW lead by the lb.

Try your 311291 and see if it can be loaded without deeply seating the boolit. You may find it works just fine.

My 7.5x55s are of the K31 variety, and I generally shoot heavy for caliber boolits, but found the Lee C309-150F (160gr) and a 311041 clone both shot very accurately, but wouldn't feed from my magazines. Try 22gr AA5744 with boolits from 160-200gr, 28-30gr H322 or 36gr 4895 under 200gr. None of these are hot loads, but all very accurate from my rifles.

I have a 1911 carbine ( K11 ) just a shorter version of the full length rifle. Been using the Lee 170 gr. flatpoint cast boolit ... it's the mould I had for 30-30 loads...sized to 308 over 13 grs RED DOT works well at 100 yards or less. I just use them for target shooting at about 50 yds.

I Just added about 1/8" to the front sight of my 96/11 and made a world of difference.

When at the range you have to be careful not to jump up and down with excitement when hitting every thing you shoot at........
