    Knife Making

Hey guys, I know we have some custom knife makers on here, and I am interested in trying it out for myself. I have access to all the woodworking stuff and possibly the leatherworking stuff I'll need. My dilemma is finding a blade I like. I want a hidden tang blade shaped like a Mora. I'll probably start with a wood handle then I may move towards stacked leather. What places do y'all order stuff from?

I've heard of jantz, but was told they're overpriced. I'm going to get some norweigan laminated blades and go to town. Do any of y'all know, is it easier to do a stacked leather handle or a solid wood handle in a hidden tang knife?

I once found a web site where the guy explained the different steels available to the homeshop knife maker.
things like car springs, coil and flat
Why you want one over the other depending on your application

I've also got a CD one some blacksmithing where they show some good stuff!

I'd like to try this too, but right from scratch, making a camp knife, a chopping knife, and a small hatchet for breasting moose/elk.

You are obviously looking at assembling pre-made knives. If you want to do actual knife-making, get with the American Blade-smith Society they will redefine what a knife is for you, and you probably have a blade-smith in your area you can talk to (very nice and helpful folks by the way). I was taught by a journeyman blade-smith how to make knives. These fellas are experts in metallurgy, wood carving, leather work, brazing, soldering, polishing, and most of all, cutting. Go and find a smith and hold some of the things they have made, you will learn a lot, and you will be amazed by what you can make in your back yard with scrounged materials. When I was a young man, I would sneak into the city landfill to find materials. I was offered $300 for knives I made out of old truck springs.
The best part is, its not hard! Knife-making is a broke mans hobby. If you follow my advice, your first knife will be something that will outperform anything that wal-mart sells, and 99% of the knives on the market. Just look up what you have to do to get a journeyman knife-makers degree from the ABS. Remember when you see what I am referring to, remember that you can do that in your back yard with materials you have found for free.

Another good site for those interested in knife making. http://www.dfoggknives.com/
Click on the bladesmithing category for information on various aspects of the process and tools involved.

I met Don Fogg many years ago when his shop was in Nottingham NH. I was blacksmithing at the time, still do occasionally...Ray

For the record, I did a lot of business with Texas Knifemakers Supply. They have a great website and if you get into the stock-removal method of producing blades out of modern steel, they are the cheapest source I have found for doing one blade at a time. However, they dont have atmospherically controlled ovens, so you will have a small amount of scale to deal with, but its not bad unless you are trying to make money with knifemaking.

You can do it on the cheap. I finished this one today, with a total expense of around 50 cents in scrap materials.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!
