hogdon 870 uses?

i have a pound of h870 powder. it seams this is a very slow powder. i shoot 22hornet, 7x57, 25-06, 35rem, 45/70, 7.7jap, and several pistol cartridges. is there any use for h870 with these? maybe 25-06?

Kinda slow even for the 25/06 I use it in my 7mm Rem Mag and that's about it.

It might work for cast bullet loads in the 25-06 and even the 7mm. I wouldn't expect high velocities, but it shouldn't be possible to overload either of those.

870 (and 860 and 8700 ) all do very well with heavier jacketed bullets in 7 mag.

With heavy bullets in the 25/06 it will give top velocities.

Just grabbed a couple manuals off the shelf to look, Speer #12, 25/06, 120gr bullet, 64.0 grs H870 3006 fps -highest velocity shown for the dozen or so powders tested. Hodgdon#26 shows 64 grs and 120gr bullet @ 3024 fps and same loading except 125 gr bullet @ 3020 fps, also highest velocity shown with that bullet and Hodgdon powder.

Have used it in 7mm Mag and 8mm Mag.

Best powder I've ever with heavy bullets in the 7mm Mag. Honest to goodness 2950fps with 76 grains and a Remington core lokt 175 grain bullet. Also loaded some Speer mag tips in that same weight and got similar velocities.

If you like the 160 grainers, you can use 80 grains and get around 3000 fps.

8mm I was a little disappointed and went with IMR7828.

My .25-06 has always preferred lighter bullets, so I've never bothered trying it in that. I only have about 1.5lbs of it left and it's not for sale!

Anyone ever use it in a 257 AI?
It seems like a case full gave about 2400-2500 in 6.5X257 and 8X57 (Well WC 870) but I think all of the higher WC 8 hundred series is about the same

Works great in the 50 BMG.
I have also used it in 30 Wetherby Magnum and 458 Winchester with good results.
Works best in large capacity cases with heavy bullets.

H870 was designed for overbore calibers guys. Look at what you all have listed as having sucess with it. Even the 25-06, tho not classed as a magnum, IS overbore.

You don't mention it, but it sure works well in the 6.5X55 with the 170gr. cruise missle boolit. Also gives very good performance with heavy cast boolits in the 243 win.

H870, I'd love to have another few pounds of it, it's my go to powder for my .264 win mag with j-word bullets. Too bad Hodgdon dropped it a few years ago and I didn't know till too late.

Try some of the Wcc860. Some lots of it are within a whisker of H870 in burn rate.

well, i have 5 pounds of re22 that my 25-06 loves with the 110 accubonds, so i don't plan on messing with that. i suppose if i end up with any 120gr bullets in some trade somewhere i might try the 870.

I use the surplus WC872, which may or may not be the same powder in my 40-65. Accurate lists their 870 in the manual with the 40-65. Smokes like black powder and accuracy is great.

There are a bunch of 45-70 loads in Accurates #2 loading manual with their 870.

H870 and AA8700 are/were canisterized versions of the powder for the GAU-8 30mm canon. Either worked well for me shooting 140SMK's in the 6.5x55mm and 6.5-06 15-20 years ago. The latter threw them at 3150fps from a 32" tube with a 50 shot ES of 1fps with full benchrest style case prep. So yeah, it'll probably work very well in the .25-06. They both also work well in big cases for lead bullets like the .45-70 and 11.15x60R.

All you can get in there, with the option of a few grains of some faster rifle powder next to the primer to get the whole thing lit off. H870 by itself in a 45-70 only manages about 900 fps. With 5 grains of 4759 or similar you can get about 1200 fps and a lot less unburnt powder being thrown around.

I have a couple of big jugs of AA8700 that was given to me. I got a 7mm Mag to use it in and it seems to work well, though I've never clocked it. I never thought of using it in my .25-06, I may have to try that next. I wonder how it would be with heavy bullets in my 6mm?

One thing is kinda cool about it, you just plain cannot cram enough of it in a case to be dangerous, at least not in 7 mag.
