What do you use under your material?

What do you use under your material for punching checks? I have tried a piece of wood using the end grain but doesn't hold up very well.

I use end grain birch and it does okay.

I have tried lead and copper but found the wood to be better.

I have been told that UHMW polyethylene is good but have not tried it yet. I also suspect that the dense rubber mats used for cutting with Exacto knives and such would be good too.

I am sure you will get lots of opinions on what is best.

The High Density Poly Ethlene (HDPE) material cutting boards, will hold up for a long time.
