My new Yankee? mold

I just got this mold in the mail today. After I saw it I had to have it. Still got it pretty cheap though. I believe it is a Yankee mold going by the pictures and descriptions in beagle's article about them. It is in very good shape and I hope to cast with it soon. I really like the hollowpoint method. The mold closes tightly and the cavity is in good condition. Just thought some of you might be interested. It is a .357 mold and judging by the boolit that was still in it when I got it, it should be about 150 grains. We'll see how fat it casts when I use it. I like the old and unusual molds. It's not perfect, but I tend to like them that way. Then I can use them without worrying about having an accident and dinging up a mint condition mold.

The shape and material look like my Yankee, but mine uses a standard Lyman type HP pin. These things cast like a dream!

I've hade several of the Yankee HP molds that use the same HP method, but it seems like every one I get has had the HP pin cut off to make a FN bullet. I've had no less than 3 of them that have had this done, and not a single one with the HP pin intact!

I bet that one will look good loaded

That's a beaut Billy. I have only one brass mould (older NEI) and it cast like a charm, bet that one will too.

What a great mold! Do you/anybody have any idea how old it is? Do you know if that is the original hinge pin and what the pin material is? Great Pictures.

Thanks to everyone. I do belive it is a Yankee mold. manleyjt, I will try to get with you later, I would like to see any other info you might have.

Mauser Rat and Ben, I have no idea how old the mold really is. In beagle's article on castpics it say they were made for about 38 years starting in about 1916. So it should be at least 60, but maybe as old as 95 years. It does look similar to a 357446 though.

I will be casting with it today. Such a nice day at about 65 degrees here. I'm gonna give the old mold a run and see how well this cast bronze(at least that is what I think it is) will cast. Thanks much, Billy

Well, after a quick cleaning of the Yankee mold, and a short casting session, I had to stop so I can either do some tuning on the mold, or send it to someone who can get it running right. The sprue plate will not lay flat on top of the blocks, leading to a huge flash on the boolit base. I never even got the mold quite hot enough as I quit early because of the flash. They fell out fine, and the HP filled out well for the most part. Only a slight tap to drop, hopefully that remains once I get it smoothed up and filling out fully. These are some poor boolits, but it is all I got as I gave up so early.


It almost seems like the top is lower on the one side. You can see the large flash on the boolit base. It is so much, it will not scrape off with a fingernail. Hopefully I can get it lined up, if not, I might see if Buckshot might want to take a look at it for me. Thanks, Billy

That's too bad Billy it's a beautiful mould. Looked like bronze to me too.
