Conveyor Belt

Where would I find used conveyor belt? I want to use it to hang some steel targets.

I am assuming you want it to act as a hinge, in which case round baler belting would work and it's available by the foot at any TSC/Farm and Fleet or many other agricultural outlets. A truck mud flap would also work and is easily cut on a table saw or with a skill saw.

We have been using old conveyer belting at the range for several years now and it has worked very well. We set posts in the ground with a two inch pipe across the top of them and suspend an eight foot section of belt between the two. This stuff is tough. You can thumb tack targets to them but stapling works better. Check with any gravel company as they should have a lot of the used belting to get rid off.
Bret is right about the truck mudflaps. I used them for many years and they work very well.

Sawmills or plywood manufacturing plants. Pulpmills (maybe). Look around your area for manufacturing plants that have to move a lot of scrap/garbage in thier process.

Also check farm supply stores that sell bulk fertilizer.

I bought mine used from the dairy. They use at walkway padding for the cows.

I had a few rolls of used conveyor belt (it was bias ply) laying around. I believe that my Grandparents had hung onto it to use as some type of insulation. My Grandparents had grown up during the Great Depression times, and they were quite hesitant to throw anything away, especially if it might prove to be useful later on down the road.

I recall some of the conveyor belt being used in an attempt to sound proof a floor/ceiling but it did not work out as well as hoped.

The remainder was stored on the family Ranch for many years.

I used some of the conveyor belt for a project. I took a chainsaw and cut some 10 foot sections off the rolls, and hung a few layers of it over an improvised backstop in my barn, for use as an indoor shooting range. I had steel plate set behind it at an angle, to stop any rounds that got through the layers of conveyor belt.

It worked great at first, up until the point where the center target areas were all shot out of the belting a few 1000 rounds later. After that, it just looked interesting, and gave you a nice place to hang a target. The metal back plate stopped all the rounds after the belting in the center had been shot out. Most boolits would just drop to the floor, right at the bottom of the steel plate. It did make recovering your lead pretty easy though.

+1 on the used mud flap suggestion. If I needed something like conveyor belt today for a smaller scale project, I would probably use mud flaps as well.

You can also check grain elevators, the belts are usually changed very often because they are very safety oriented because of the danger of explosions caused by the grain dust.

if you lived closer i could give you all you want. i work in a food prossing plant we use a lot of it. 50 to 100' long from 12" to 24" wide.

Go to your local fire station and ask them if they have any old hose. It works well.
