    Off topic FN 5.7

I am trying to select my future carry weapon. My current choices are the .357, the CZ75b, the 1911 in .45 ACP, and the FN 5.7 which is the one I am favoring the most. What are the plus and minus of each weapon, what other guns would you recommend and what gun do you carry and what position do you carry it?

My personal choice would be the 1911 45 acp.
It has a long standing reputation for getting the job done.

I am carrying a Colt Officers in stainless. I have a summer comfort in the pants holster that is positioned on my right side between my side pocket and back pocket. I have received a bunch of criticism because I prefer a metal gun over a plastic one and the number of rounds I have in the officers verses a Glock.

Bottom line is this....what I point at I hit so there is no need for a mini arson el strapped to my waste.

Well you didn't really get very specific here. How do you plan to carry? What are your needs and priorities?

What .357 are you talking about? .357mag in a revolver of .357sig in an autoloader?

Everything you've listed is pretty heavy and bulky for a carry gun IMO. For me, a carry gun is sacrificing a bit to make it small and light so it's easily concealed.

I don't have much experience with the 5-7, but a couple negatives for it are that ammo can be rare and pricey, and some ranges don't allow it because they're concerned about over-penetration and it tearing up their bullet traps. The upsides are capacity and power, although I wonder a bit about those tiny little bullets, even though they're really zinging.

The FN 5.7 is not easy to conceal.

5.7, you may as well use a 22mag same difference.

I'd choose ANY of the other 3 you mentioned as they are all proven cartridges and much better suited for the task.

22 mag ammo is much cheaper, and much more available. Kel-Tecs coming out with a 22mag, and you could probably buy 3 of them for the same price of an FN 5.7. They're both made out of plastic, so there's no big advantage there.

the 5.7fn in a pistol is the equivalent(in velocity) to .22mag in a RIFLE.

the 5.7fn has a pretty good variety of bullets/loads available. from hornady v-max, to barnes solids.

the five seven pistol is extremely light, and fairly thin. with 20 flat shooting minimal recoil rounds its a decent choice for carry.

A friend has a 5.7 and I guess I'm just too much of a reloader and caster to appreciate it. Reloading can be tricky for the 5.7 on many fronts and ammo isn't as readily available as the others you mentioned. If you are asking me...............45 ACP can run a heavy slug (230 grains) which carries good knock down on two legged animals and the lower velocity will keep the bullet from traveling through as easily hitting innocent bystanders. The 1911M ACP has been recycling garbage for the USA since March 29th, 1911 when it was officially adopted by the US Army.

Check it out yourself, most 5.7 velocity data was taken from 10-3/8 subgun barrels In a 4-7/8 handgun, I'd expect perhaps 1800 fps at best with a 40 grain bullet. This is slightly faster than the 22 magnum, but not by very much. There are some specialized 22 magnum self-defense loads available now.

In the real world, I think you could expect to see about 300 fps difference between the two in similar barrel lengths. The .357 mag is a monster in comparison.

if you want the real scoop on 5.7x28 check here: http://www.fivesevenforum.com/

many custom manufacturers that make very hot(compared to the factory stuff). with lots of real world chrony and ballistics tests.

i used to have an ar57 upper. it was a bit of a pita to reload at first, but not too bad. 5.7 ammo is more abundant here than .22mag, but about $6/50 more.

The best thing about the Five seveN is that it's light. It also holds a lot of ammo. its actually not to bad to conceal because the grip is thinner than most double stacked guns out there. Its kinda long, but carrying ITW its not a problem. When comparing the 5.7x28mm to a 22WMR make sure to take into account barrel length on both cartridges. If your going to get one shoot it first.

In his book on lever action rifles and handguns, Paco Kelly had some interesting comments on the .22 mag. The gist of it was that its performance was all out of proportion to the numbers. As I recall, he related a story about using it on a BG and doing some serious damage.

our local predator control at our airport uses a 22magRF as Centerfires were frowned upon by the local constabulary, and they suggested a 22RF... (so the mag got slipped in there) A highperformance pellet rifle handles the little pests out to 150yds.

anyways, it will completely penetrate a badger from almost any angle inside 100 yds, and with hollowpoints, complete passthroughs on broadside shots inside the same 100.

I was impressed to say the least.

Kel-Tec P3AT .380, Inexpensive, uber light, small package, plenty of punch. Mine is small enough that I carry it EVERYWHERE. You can have the most ass kickin gun the world has ever seen but if you do not carry it at all times it does you no good.

During the cooler months I wear my RIA 1911 .45, but during the warm months you will find the 380 on me even if I am casting in nothing but a thong.

For social work, the 45 ACP, beyond a doubt. 357 can be uncontrollable in a small handgun. 5.7 ??

Along the same light/small/punch train of thought, I like to carry my Kahr CW9. I love the compactness of it.
