    Fresh Horse Radish

Today my lady had 2 of her sisters & Brother in Laws over for dinner
I was expected to be show up and be on my best behavior

My only job was to bring a horse radish root
As we were having roast beef

So this AM I dug one and when I showed up
I washed all the dirt off and got it ready to grate

None of them had ever had FRESH dug horseradish , just the pre grated stuff in a jar

After the meal I thought a fight was going to start over who was getting the rest of the root

So it was cut in 1/2

    Now they are hooked

It's amazing to see people eat or taste foods that are homemade and do not come in a can or jar. The freshness and intensity of flavor is so much better.

Do you make any sort of a sauce or prearation, or just serve it straight grated? I like to sprinkle in a little vinegar to hold the color and I think it brings out the burn too.

Depending where you plant it, it can be a blessing or a curse.

We grated it straight onto our plates
As needed , we passed the root and the grated around the table

But I also mix with mayo for sandwitchs

    LOL the burn
I dug some a few years back in Augest , a very dry summer
Best way to discribe it , our ears started to smoke

Good stuff. There's a fellow grates it and sells it not far from me, in fact it's on the way to the range I belong to. I eat quite a bit of it, I'm on my 3rd pint since last fall. Supposed to have been one of the bitter herbs the children of Israel ate on the first passover.

Years ago I planted some in a garden.

Thought i was going to have to use RoundUp to stop the spread.

Oh DO NOT grind Horseradish with a power grinder inside of a house UNLESS you have a full face respirator.

Horseradish works with fish also . . . just a hint of horseradish and the fish flavor "POPS".

Jay maybe a small donation to the website and postage for you for starter roots???
    I'm ready for some!

The root they sell in the produce area of the grocery store will generally grow. Cut them into about two inch sections, and plant.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Horse radish thrives on being dug up.
the more you dig it up, the faster in spreads.

The ground is still frozen here, but I will have
some to share. Last year I thought I thoroughly dug up
some in preparation for a new Rhubarb patch.
all summer long I was trying to dig up horse radish shrouts.
Ever if I break out the round up...that's my plan for this spring.
I have some from another patch to share.

OK guys. The frost is out. I am planning on digging sometime this week, if it stops raining.
Quite a few have asked for some starts and I think my supply is all spoken for. I will get with you'all soon and get some sent out.
I will write up my knowledge of growing and processing it and send or post it.

Armoracia rusticana Horseradish, a member of the mustard family,
Horseradish is a hardy perennial which grows between 18 and 30 inches tall, although it has been reported as tall as five feet in some areas around the world. Blooming in mid-summer, horseradish produces profuse bunches of small white flowers above long, vertical, glossy green leaves.
Best soil type and pH for horseradish growing

Rich, moist, heavy soil with a pH of 6.8 is best for growing horseradish.

Ahhhhhh, fresh horse radish !!!!! When it locks your throat and burns your eyes-- its the best !! We use a food processer when grinding up a big batch and use just enough white vinagar to make it grind. ONLY do it outside and on a windy day. Stay up wind. Smother a big deer or elk roast --- there is nothing finer. Works on slow elk as well.

My mother and her neighbor used to raise and grind horse radish. It must be ground outside in a food processor dedicated to horse radish.
