My Pedersoli RB Super Match, 40-65

This is in 40-65. Has a 34" half octagon to round barrel. No taper to it so it's a might heavy with the smaller 40 cal hole. Hangs out there nice.

The rear sight is the Soule modification done by Lee Shaver to one of the cheap 'Flip-Flop" type abortions. Turns it into a very useable sight. Or at least it is for my needs.

The rifle is as accurate as it is good looking. It's not something you'd want to hold up all day though. I've never fired any BP through it but might give that a try one of these days.

if you want to stop the flop, email Kermit Hoke at Kermitool
get one of his springs and screw, use it in the front screw, the spring has a slot in it to adjust angle, and it is nowhere as mickey mouse as the folded piece of almost spring steel on the sight.

How do you like that 40-65? I was just going to order a new barrel from Green mountain for a new RB project and was tossing between the 40-82 and the 40-65.
Do you have any leading problems with the 34" barrel?. I need to make weight on this one and plan on using a scope for it. What is the weight with sights etc? I have a got a few custom RB's and a couple of Pedersoli's. The Bodine I have in 45-70 is a great shooter. I haven't really had a chance to develope a good load for the 45-90 Sharps yet though.

That 40-82 is very interesting to me but I have heard it is tempromental to get to shoot properly. I would think it would be hard to find brass and dies for it as well.

I have been considering a 38-55 as well. Probably have to use a #4 GM barrel to make weight on that skinny hole though.

Jerdog, I have a 40-82 in an original 86 Winchester. The barrel has been relined since the original was pretty bad and the liner is 1-18 twist so it doesn't shoot the light bullets very well. I have a 350gr mold that I use for my 40-65 and it shoots that pretty good. The brass can be formed from any of the 45 basic cases. I used 45-100 & 45-110 to form mine just because I got a good deal on them. 45-90 would probably work ok.
I was shooting mine yesterday with 5744 and was getting some flyers but I think that this was from the case not being filled very far up. Some BP loads that I had put together shot a pretty nice group. I think that large case with loose smokless leaves to much room for the powder to move around. I'm going to try some kapok next time. That might solve the problem.

    Bob
