    Cool Made meat.

The second part of the gun season is this week end and I was out this morning.
At a little past 11:00 am, 4 does and a buck came into the woods. They were about 60 yards away and the buck did not offer a good shot.
They mulled around for a bit testing the wind, and then they started to move. The buck was a very nice 12 pointer. I was about to make him mine when I noticed that one of the dose was limping.
Oh man, I thought. The doe has a busted front leg. I want the buck, but the doe needs to be taken out.
Oh well, the buck would have be old and tough anyway. So, I took the doe with one shot to the neck.
I used my S&W 629 with a Lyman Devastator boolit.

    Hickory,
    Good for you Sir.
Good game mananagement and an act of kindness.
Many would not have passed a chance at a good buck to harvest an animal that may have been suffering.
My hat is of to you.

Yeah, big thumbs up. Character is what you do when no one is looking.

Did you discover what the problem - cause was for the limp?

    Bet you sleep easy.

What platform were you using to send that Devastator down range? That's some good shooting. Congrats.

Dang Hickory with the pic being a bit fuzzy I thought you had a story about getting one with the hay prong.

    Congratulations on making meat.
    Good shooting.

I am carrying some 265 RD's in the SRH tomorrow to see if there are any suicidal deer out in the woods.

Really scouting a piece of property i have not been on in about 10 years and will certainly plug meat if it appears

That looks like a big doe!! Good on you for making the smart game management decision.

Hope you realize your link takes folks to the whole Fototime album. Certainly nothing there to be ashamed of - nice revolvers, bullets, lady with a nice buck, an infant etc. Nothing wrong... just protect yourself....sucks we even discuss such things - just the world we live in.

OK. The boolit was Lymans 429640.
The alloy was, about 20-1, lead - tin
Powder charge was 17.0 gr. AA #9

    I used a S&W 629 44 magnum with 17.0 gr. of AA #9 powder.
This is a good load for this gun, will print 4-5" at 100yards off sand bags.

    Von Gruff.
About 5 minutes before these deer entered the woods, there was a rattle-battle in the next woods. Must have been 5 or 6 guys emptied their guns in the course of one minute on deer.
The doe I shot had its front left leg at the hock nearly shot off.
I'll try to ge a picture tomorrow when it gets light.

Good job. I did almost the same thing a few years ago. I had a late season doe tag and a few deer were crossing a field. I had intended on taking a large doe, but one of the small ones was limping. Same decision that you made. Unfortunately, the small one ended up being a button buck (still legal) with a rock/ice chunk wedged in between his hoof (probably would have been fine).

Anyway, good decision on your side. Congrats.

Although I did not see the leg on the deer that I shot, I could tell by the way it was limping that it was indeed injured. I suposse it is possable for it to have lived, but, weather it would have or not the rest of its life would have been a misreable existance.

Congratulations on a good decision and fine doe. Any animal with an injury like that would have fed the coyotes around here. You done good.

Great choice. That deer certainly needed to be harvested.
I have had great luck with that devastator bullet.
