Why does he put the PP bullets into wax?
I wrap wet; started that way and have never tried any other method.

There are a lot of old wives tales about BN BP cartridges. I think they were propagated by folks who never shot one.

I have no idea how the brass you select contributes to carbon build-up. I have fired many thousands of rounds with short brass & BP and never saw any carbon build-up. I shoot 40-50BN, 40-65 Win,...

LKR, have you tried pistol primers with the OE 1.5Fg powder. I have an exceptionally accurate load in my 38-55 with PP bullets, OE 1.5Fg, and pistol primers.

Why not contact APP about loading a 43 Spanish. Personally, i have never heard of it before, so I would guess that it was a flop in the market place.

mongo40,
The basic problem you have is trying to use a target load for hunting.
The hunting load is different from a target load, so just rethink the hunting load.

Bob,
I shot a 40-70SS in a 1874 Shiloh Sharps for several years. Also used a Hiwall in 40-82 Winchester as well as a Browning 40-65 [latter opened up to 40-82 Silhouette by Lone Star Rifle]. ...

Mongo, I shoot a 45-100 and I can not imagine shooting a 45-110 with a finer granulation than Fg.
I shoot 86 grains of Fg OE and a 515 grain PP bullet with a MV of 1300 fps.

tmacmi,
What alloy are the bullets that your friend sent to you?
If you are able to push that bullet part way into the barrel, then I am guessing that a
charge of BP will push it through the...

You must keep in mind, the target loads you are probably building are not in need of the crimp because they will not be subjected to the same "rough handling" as military ammo.

My experience with a 40 2.5 Sharps is the same a sharpsguy. With 0.060 poly wads in BA stretched 30-40 Krage brass, and gg bullets I had many case separations. Fiber wads or cork wads solved the...

Try heating your lube in a double boiler on the stove. The lube will not burn in a double boiler.

Knarley,
About how far into the case do you seat the bullet? How much does the 70 grains, fill the case when drop tubed?
At one time I used Goex, and it usually took about 0.350" compression...

Consider putting a piece of paper between the bullet and the wax wad.
The wax may stick to some of the bullet bases.

For the compression to change from 0.100 to 0.250 would mean that your starline cases hold about 8 grains less powder.
I can tell you this, I do the same thing [cut down 45-90 brass] and it is not...

I would try one of those 44-40 cases in the 38-40 FL die. Go several times part way and stay lightly lubricated. The wall thickness is very thin so be careful.

The difference between the 40-50 BN and the 40-65 WCF is about 8-10 grains of 1.5 Fg powder. The original Sharps company never chambered a 40-65.
I do not know which one I would choose over the...

If you are not shooting at over 600 yards, then why not a 40-50 SBN, which is formed from 45-70 brass.
You will need a shallow seating depth for shooting gg bullets, maybe 3/8" or less.

Of the two, the Sharps is the best option for LR shooting. The Pedersoli has a very good barrel, but the tang sight needs to be replaced.
