LKR, have you tried pistol primers with the OE 1.5Fg powder. I have an exceptionally accurate load in my 38-55 with PP bullets, OE 1.5Fg, and pistol primers.

The basic problem you have is trying to use a target load for hunting.
The hunting load is different from a target load, so just rethink the hunting load.

I shoot 86 grains of Fg OE and a 515 grain PP bullet with a MV of 1300 fps.

You must keep in mind, the target loads you are probably building are not in need of the crimp because they will not be subjected to the same "rough handling" as military ammo.

About how far into the case do you seat the bullet? How much does the 70 grains, fill the case when drop tubed?
At one time I used Goex, and it usually took about 0.350" compression...

Consider putting a piece of paper between the bullet and the wax wad.
The wax may stick to some of the bullet bases.

For the compression to change from 0.100 to 0.250 would mean that your starline cases hold about 8 grains less powder.
I can tell you this, I do the same thing [cut down 45-90 brass] and it is not...

I would try one of those 44-40 cases in the 38-40 FL die. Go several times part way and stay lightly lubricated. The wall thickness is very thin so be careful.

If you are not shooting at over 600 yards, then why not a 40-50 SBN, which is formed from 45-70 brass.
You will need a shallow seating depth for shooting gg bullets, maybe 3/8" or less.

Of the two, the Sharps is the best option for LR shooting. The Pedersoli has a very good barrel, but the tang sight needs to be replaced.

Some one is misleading you if you think that a Sharps requires alot of parts to operate. I have had more breakage on my Highwall rifles than on my Sharps rifles.
