I have found that you want to lean toward round nose bullets, as they tend to feed better into the chamber. Flat nose can hang up and be a pain when cycling.

What weight of bullet do you guys generally prefer in a 2 groove? GC or no?

I know Colerain and Sleepy Hill barrels have offered them over the years. I have always been interested in them, but never had one myself.

Good choice of rifle! To be honest I have only shot factory loads in mine over the years. It is my go-to gun for elk in the woods. It is a stinking show stopper. Elk can soak up a lot of lead,...

I am using IMR's max data. I don't crimp and I'm not seeing any indicators on the case head. I compared a factory load to a sized case and the shoulder is set back quite a bit further on my...

Buckshot looking groups could be more fundamental issues than just your sling wrap. All shooting requires good fundamentals, but shooting service rifles at long range will really bring out your...

Look for videos on youtube. That said, make sure the demonstrator is a reputable builder and not some Bubba with a video camera. Hershel House did a good video on lock tuning, I seem to recall Jim...

55 Grains of 4350 behind 165 gr. Sierra SPBT. 44.3 grains of 3031 behind the same bullet. Remington 9 1/2 Large Rifle primer.
A bullet will slide into a fired case easily. The cases did not...

I'm trying to work up a load in my Winchester M54 30-06. I have used both 4350 and 3031 and gotten the same result. I take the manufacturer's max load and reduce it by 10% and am getting a sticky...

No the pin isn't numbered, sorry to confuse. I was referring to the corresponding drill bit size, shortly before it occurred to me that I could mic it.

Thanks Bob! The retaining pin appears to be a #52, but it is hard to tell. Is that what you have used in the past?

The screw at the back of the tang on top and bottom both need to be removed, then the buttstock should slide away from the tang. I believe the third screw is forward on the tang at the base of the...

Is that Bore Butter the stuff that smells like Ben Gay in a yellow tube? I think I used some of that before and it made good patch lube. I mostly use spit for patch lube, or bear grease if I'm...

I have a 38/357 and it is a hoot, the one thing to keep in mind is to load the 38's to your max OAL, and use round nose boolits for ease of feeding. Others may have experienced different than me,...

Your .54 will kill a moose easily with good shot placement. I've never shot a brown bear, so I cannot speak to that. I load PRB over 90 gr. of FFFG, and it does the trick, but I'd say that's your...

My .54 likes more patch and less ball. .527 ball with an .018 patch shoots really nice. I about need a hammer to get a .535 patched ball down my barrel. Your rifle may be different, but pick up...

I have always been in the "less ball, more patch" camp my ownself. With good soft lead and a good charge of BP, the ball will obturate adequately to bite the rifling. I like a patch of .015-.018...

Let er' Buck!
Thanks for the info. It appears the front sight could be easily fabricated, it will just be like zeroing a flintlock. Are you a Redleg?

I bought a 1903A3 some time ago, but have only recently devoted some time to it. It groups very nicely, but consistently about 10" high at 100 yds. I checked the tension on the barrel lugs, and...

You could maybe trade that pure lead to someone casting roundballs in exchange for an equal amount of alloy. I cast both and find pure soft lead harder to find. Some buckskinner would probably be...

I'm happy to see all the fellas in here that are for restoring rifles. I guess that's the difference between shooters and interior decorators. We owe it to these old rifles to keep them in good...

That's a nice little tribute. A nice trapper in 30-30 too!

Sorry I forgot about the rest of your post. The only appropriate cleaning solution for your rifle is water. If you want to put a little dish soap in there that's fine. Swab the barrel dry and run...
