Probably 4140 pre-hardened to 35-40 rc. Best bet would be to ask PTG. Shouldn't be a problem to cut, with properly hardened drills, reamers, etc.

I started with 4140PH, learned to cut my own threads, etc. You can make a D-reamer from drill rod, either 0-1 or W-1. I had so much trouble making a D-reamer for .224 dies that I finally ground one...

Actually post#2 said to contact the mfg. OP stated in post#3 that he already had. OP was probably just trying to find some consolation until mfg contacted back, not trying to de-fame mfg.

Forrest r, that's an even better idea than I first thought. It certainly helps make the process a lot less labor intensive. Have you tried feeding them through a bolt gun, or AR platform?

NN, look in the "stickies", there is a thread by KTN "Home made dies" IIRC.
Also Caneman has several threads where he made his .224 dies and .30 dies. I have several threads on parts I've made to...

I think Supe47 was the original guy behind the core shaker.
Here is the thread. Don't know if the pictures are still there though.

Garandsrus, thanks that's pretty much the conclusion I have come too. I've tried 3 different ways to turn it down and it has snapped off every time at .150-.165". Not worth setting up a steady rest...

Just tried to turn a piece of 1/2" W-1 down to 1/8" with a .221 base that was 3" long. I had it down to .165", but didn't think .028 was enough support between the shoulder of the base and the die. ...

I was working on my core seating die a few weeks back and thought I was a .219 ID. I figured I had better learn to pour some cores and try swaging them. Got that done, and today I tried seating a few...

Yes, most of the swage presses use the top section to hold a punch and the die is mounted on the ram. Then the ejector punch is in the ram itself and has to be blocked by a wedge passed through the...

Cane, you're getting MOA using cores cut to length??? If so that is great. I'm going to give it one more try with the mold and a new sprue plate them move onto something else if it doesn't cut the...

Howard, thanks for the insight. I thought about making large cores and swaging wire, if they could be cut to accurate weights. I agree swaging the cores is a lot of extra steps and time consuming. ...

Yes, a few people have commented on pouring 2 cavities, then 4, etc. to warm the mold. I was able to open the mold easily, but sprues did not want to cut because they were the same diameter as the...

I finally got my CNC mill running, but haven't learned to program in Linux yet. Maybe one day. I know there was a fellow with a 3D printer, not sure if he was the same one who was making them out...

Brian, thanks for the idea. I've been making my own dies for the past year. I was thinking about building the swage press in the "sticky", then thought about buying a Sea Girt. I've been trying to...

I saw these on flea-bay. I think they are the same as the other post, but a different vendor. If you were interested in them.

Rolltide, I might be missing it but I don't see any cutting flutes on the tapered section of the reamer.

Thanks, I'll increase as needed, but hoping to keep it as small as possible so that cutting the sprues is easier.

The jacket die is the easiest to make. I ordered a 3/16" drill bushing from Grainger, 1/2"OD X 1" long with a flange on it to keep it from being pushed through the die. Make your 7/8" die with a...

Great job. I've been busy with the core die and still working on the core seat die. I've had to put that down to make cores, smelt some lead, and a few other medical issues. Hope to be back at the...

I knew that he made one, so it had to be possible to cut the sprues. I'm going to try a 1/16" sprue hole and work my way up to see what the minimum sprue hole is that will flow at a decent rate.

I bought a small HF concrete mixer, and it works great. Didn't even have to invest in SS pins.
The lathe idea is very cool though.

Sunny and in the 70's here today. Just finished smelting about 125# of roofing lead. It did snow here when my daughter was a toddler back in '76, I believe. We actually had 2-3 inches of snow on...

OK, I made my first core mold for .223 cores and it didn't quite work out as I expected. It was capable of making 8 cores, but my sprue plate wouldn't cut the sprues off. I wound up cutting them...
