IMO, the Winchester model 12 will always be #1. The Ithaca 37 was a nice well made gun, as is the old 870 Wingmaster. Current production, the Browning BPS is #1 with everything else a distant second.

Not #5 shot, but I've mixed 6, 7.5 and 8 shot from old shells I've cut up for the shot. I loaded it and couldn't tell a difference.

I have used nail polish. I don't know if it makes them more weather proof, but it makes me feel like they are.

In my experience, shotgun patterns fall apart quickly. My full choked gun throws an 11" pattern at 40 yards, but it opens up to 16-18" at 50 and will put most of the pellets in 24" at 60.
