The top of the lands is the bore diameter. As opposed to the groove diameter. Pin gauges work the best for that.

Forum: Cast Boolits
Good article, I hadn't seen that before. It aligns with what I figured out many years ago. Just load them like they're meant to be loaded and they work great.

That's a deal and sure beats having to make them!

That mismatch is intentional. It is what is on the SAAMI print. As long as you use black powder and soft lead it works just fine. My H&R target classic or whatever they called it is the same way....
Forum: Cast Boolits
Don't resize the cases, bell minimally if needed, cast bullets from 1:20 or softer, use good lube, and it will shoot. Those have fast rifling twist and like heavy bullets.

The nipples were 1/4-32, so if the threads are loose you'll need to open it up to a larger size. I use a .440 ball in mine also, the most accurate load is 15gr fffg. Any more and groups open up.

I convinced a machinist to make me some of those when I was about 12 years old. I'd read about shooting wax bullets with shotgun primers. It worked great, we shot a bunch of those in the basement. ...

Build a 6 ARC with a slow twist 1:14 barrel and it would be ideal for cast boolits. My own 6mm-222 can run at full power with incredibly good accuracy using 75gr. boolits. And none of this new...
Leshy's YouTube channel is really something as well. Not for the feint of heart.

Even better than a CNC milling machine is a wire EDM. Years ago I had to make several sets of custom mounts like that for some F class shooters back when that sport was just getting started. They...

Ha! It does come around now and then.
Yes, for the price of not many of those bullets you could buy a Lee 405 HB made just for the Trapdoor.

Way more bearing surface. Like an aluminum jacketed bullet.

Isn't pretty much all IMR powder the same thing chemically? Just different shapes and coatings on it.
Forum: Rimfire Area
I got a lot from David Tubb's books regarding offhand technique.
Get a set of rimfire silhouette swingers and practice with those at the correct range. Hitting those more than 80% of the time is...

Don't do that. Not only will it not shoot well but aluminum oxide run through a barrel really fast with lots of pressure behind it is not beneficial to the barrel. Why not just use paper? Paper...

I'm not saying much but sure learning a lot. It's amazing that a $4K riflescope is starting to look reasonable.

Interesting, in that he used water and dextrin to hold it together rather than the nitro glue for everything. I wonder which way would work better? Thanks for the link.
Those molds are pretty...

Yes. Don't do it unless you have to.

I make a new one and dovetail it in. But if you want to keep it stock, silver solder.

My New Englander does really well with .715" bare balls. I do have to wipe after a couple of shots though. I don't have the one with the choke, just a cylinder bore.
Forum: Hunting with CB's
Ah, I just realized that Lee makes two 405 grain bullets. One is for smokeless, casts out at .457 or so,takes a gas check, and has tiny lube grooves. That one is useless for black powder. The one you...

My wife used to work in a pulp mill in Ketchikan. Their two main customers were Alliant Energetics and the food industry. It makes great gunpowder, and diet food.

Use soft lead and good BP lube and it won't lead. I shoot gobs of those through my Trapdoor with no problem at all.
Forum: Black Powder Cartridge
Those are good looking cartridges, much better than mine came out! You could test the rifle by possibly wrapping paper or other material around the action when you fire it to see if that gets burned...

I have a mould from Accurate that throws a .350" bullet about 210 grains. I use it in my 35 caliber inline muzzleloader, and paper patch it for the 35 centerfires. It does have tumble lube type...
