Don't forget to check craigslist. I see people posting rolls of 97/3 solder occasionally for around $1 to $2 a pound. You have to be quick though because it normally goes fast.

If used correctly it's fine. But there are more forgiving lubes out there such as imperial sizing wax or the simple lanolin alcohol mixes.
