For rat sized critters I would say #12. Rabbits I would want a larger shot like 7 1/2. I get overrun by packrats. They make huge messes. #12 works just fine on them.

I had a 94AE in 45 colt. Although it fed and shot fine I never did like the feel. It was far from smooth and I agree, just had a clunky feel to it. I much prefer the '92 for pistol caliber.

I load Blackhorn 209 with a .030 wad per load data under a lee 405 ( both flat base and hollow base ). It'll have some compression. Works great for me in several 45-70's.

I like 5744 or 3031 in 30-30 under cast.
