atr,if that works for you great. Once you remove metal, it’s removed.
I have had to shorten front sights before, but I shoot it a LOT first & make sure it’s the gun & not me on a given day.
I think...
The name says it all! .44 SPECIAL no 5 shot would be my choice, the good old 1950 Target, mod. 24, would get the nod. As for hotrodding it, why? We can safely get 900fps with a 245, to 250gr cast...
Anything but G10 or rubber:Fire:wood, bone, or ivory, get my vote & I’ve seen some really nice synthetic ivory!

I had a Win. 94 Trapper .30-30 that would keep 2” @ 100yds off the bench with factory iron sights. I once had 3 touching at 50yds factory irons.
They’ll shoot!

Heck, I’d try it & see! If it works, great if not order the correct one.

I wanted a 6.5X55, they are scarce. I went with the 6.5 Creedmoor, they were everywhere! I like the 6.5s:lol:

Shoot, I’d have to leave Montana to do that!

Hopefully too cold for them here in Montana?;)
I also find the .44 Special very useful & mostly use Skeltons old load. Penetration with a hard cast bullet in the 240gr+ has to be seen to be believed.

If you can pick up a copy of Mike Venturinos shooting lever actions of the old west I think he covers most of the older cartridges. It’s a great read!

Well, if someone offered it as a gift I’d pick the .357. It would have mild recoil, probably be accurate, components available & inexpensive (compared to other ctgs.) & would be fun to shoot!

Oh boy, pass the popcorn!!!!!:coffee::coffee:

Winger Ed. Is quite correct, your shoulder may holler STOP before the Henry does:wink:
I’m sure your Father will enjoy that nice rifle!

Thanks hpbear101, that is informative.
Blowing up bbls. wasn’t my concern but damaging actions. Actions can stretch on older guns, the steel & heat treatments weren’t what we have today.
When we...

How long since that powder has been available? The lock up on the 73 isn’t as strong as later rifles. I am aware that replicas are available in .357. The key word, replica. To each his own. The...
I’ve found it’s not the bbl length that’s difficult to conceal, but the cylinder width, & the configuration of the butt. A round butt gun is easier to conceal than a square butt gun.

The Henry will probably shoot well with most loads. Definitely not with Ruger #1 loads. To start there a lot of cowboy action lead bullet loads being sold now, those should be pleasant to shoot.

Trimble, that being an original 73 I would use Black Powder & a compressed charge, a soft bullet, with a lot of lubricant. I also would not shoot it a lot, it’s an old valuable rifle, made for Black...
Those old break action revolvers were probably carried a lot more than people expect. In an era where a dollar was really a dollar, I’m betting a lot of folks used what they could afford?

Having just read this thread, it’s interesting how many had a lever BB gun as their 1st. I did Tim!:-):-)

I have seen their 92s in both .357 & .44 mag. They looked nice.
