Reloading .270 WIN (.277) with .280 Cast Boolits ?
I'm just curious if one would run into problems with reloading .270 Winchester brass with a .280 cast bullet that is already lubed and GC'd ? I simply have to ask because everything I reload for .270 WIN is sized to .277 spot on. I'm not comfortable with the idea of putting a golfball through a garden hose. If I'm wrong tell me.
What say ye ? Reasoning ?
0.003 over groove doesn't seem to be that much, as long as it will chamber...
have you tried to insert one into a fired case?

Generally, .003 over groove size with cast boolits isn't a problem as long as you don't substitute them into an existing load made for a smaller diameter the same weight; there's a small pressure increase as you go above groove size, but it's not huge until the boolit starts to get substantially oversize. Start with correct loading techniques (reduce published loads 10% and work up to best accuracy while watching for pressure signs) and there should be no problem.
I have used .311 bullets in every .30 caliber rifle I have ever owned.
The few I have slugged slugged .308 to .3085
.311 has worked so well for me that I never bother to slug them anymore.

Assuming the .280 bullets will chamber then they should be just right.

Well IF they chamber. They wont in a mod 70 win that I have and wont in an extra barrel. But if it does in your gun go for it . .278 in mine is snug but not hard to close bolt
Well, there in lies my concern. I size "my" casts to .277 I got these casts from a member here. I expected .277 / .278 but they arrived as .280 lubed & GC'd. I'm not familiar with, nor am I comfortable with, like I said "trying to shove a golf through a garden hose". These cast bullets, in the photo are for punching paper, so, I have more interest in just resizing them and going GCless and being done.Quote:

No harm, no foul on this end. I've learned to be overly specific and detailed from this point on...
Nothing says you can't size them again, if you're used to using .278 and (apparently) have the necessary equipment. I wouldn't expect .280 to shoot any better than .278 (once your boolit is big enough, bigger usually doesn't help) if .278 is right for your rifle, but I wouldn't expect it to work noticeably worse, either.Quote:
