296, hands down.
I voted for 296/H110, but if it had not been "full power loads"' I would have voted for 2400 because you can load it to a lower pressure without using magnum primers. I haven't been as lucky as 44Man in that I have had bad experiences with H110/296 with std primers AND the manufacture recommends magnum primers with that powder. My best shooting all around load is 16.6 grs of 2400 with a 250 Lyman429421. But for full house loads H110 is tough to beat. especially with 300 gr boolits. I gotta say that I was surprised to see 231 get that many votes. My 2 cents
2400 is how I roll
Will be following this thread with interest; my first attempt at a specific hunting load (trying a few different JSP's) gave me disappointing accuracy with WC820 (i.e. H110 etc) in a rifle that has exhibited excellent accuracy with other loads.
So when I pick up that project again, I'll be looking for a secondary candidate powder.
I have used H110 and had no real complaints except it is for full power loads.
Now I use IMR4227 because it is close enough to H110 at the upper end but allows much more flexibility in loading down from full power loads and it gets used in my .303's and .308 with cast boolits as well.
2400 is my huckleberry
It has been so long since I have used anything but 820 I don't remember when it was. Light loads get red dot.
yep 2400 for me but I also had good luck with BlueDot
2400 is my Medicine. Just wish it wasn't hard find or I wouldn't have even tried all the others you mentioned.
2400 for most heavy loads, W296 for the real heavies (320 grainers) and Unique for the 'other' 95% of my 44 mag shooting.
I'm with Luckydawg on this one . 2400 for the heavier stuff and Bluedot for the slightly moderate loads . I only use bullets in the two forty and heavier weight category .
Jack
mostly Unique [2400 if I want to ramp things up]
I just done some loads up with BE-86 about 1.5grs higher than my normal unique load.
if I want to do 44 magnum I have a 445
Honestly since I haven't tried them all I can't really answer your question. Having said that, I prefer 2400 over 4227 and is my 'go to' powder in 44mag. I've gotten good results with 231 and have some #9 just haven't tried it yet. My results with 2400 have been good enough that I've never felt the need to try 110/296.
Accuracy hands down goes to old W296. It just meters so well out of a powder measuse. I haven't really been shooting alot of 44 mag the past 15-20 years. 7 have tried both 2400 and Bdot and ran into early pressure signs with the lot of Bdot and have either stuck with Unique for plinkers ad 296 for full house. I just got into boolit casting a year or so ago so things may change.
If I want power now, a 445, 475LB or Smith 500 will easily fill the role.
Nobody likes AA#9 ?
I would maybe like it.
but I'm burning it up in the 300 BO too fast to try it in anything else.
i used to take out my ruger srh in 44 mag and i would shoot either the hornady 200 or 240gr jhp with a stiff charge of win296. but i'm old(at least my boy thinks i'm old) and disabled, my ruger sbh(4 5/8" barrel) in 44 mag likes it better when i go with the 44sp and a 250gr mihek hp(40:1) with 7.0gr charge of unique. it will do a deer out to 50 yards. i do have 2400 but i never used it for my 44 mag.
Back in the early days I used many pounds of 2400 and liked it. Still a good old powder.
the 4227's can be accurate if you keep your gun cool.
Early H110 never shot for me except in a RH. 296 didn't shoot in a RH so it was strange.
But for IHMSA , 240 Hornady's both SIL and XTP's when they came out would do 1/2" at 50 meters with 296 so it is all I buy. Now I shoot all cast and from 300 to 330 gr and 296 has proven best. Yet a 240-250 cast does better with 2400 and Unique along with 231.
There is a difference between Hornady 240 and cast, don't know why. Bore resistance?? If I wanted to shoot the lighter cast I would go back to 2400.
Had really good luck with accuracy using 300-mp, takes quite a bit of powder though. Unique fits everything l need it to.
