C'ant handle spicy food too well anymore so keep mine simple. Cut a pound of bacon into 1" pieces and fry in my Nesco. When done remove any excess grease and toss in a small head of cabbage cut into chunks and add a bit of water and allow to steam till tender but still crunchy. While its cooking boil up a pound of wide egg noodles, drain and toll in Nesco. A stick of butter on top and stir on low heat until the cabbage and noodles are well mixed and coated with the butter and bacon fat. Salt and pepper to taste. Heat leftovers in the microwave for follow up meals.
Don't forget to add the noodles to the fried cabbage. Then sprinkle on breadcrumbs just before eating it.
Growing up, my mom's version of corned beef and cabbage was cabbage fried up with the fatty canned corned beef. Yikes, that was good eating!
There was on here a couple of years ago on fried cabbage steaks with cheese on top that was very good. There is a youtube video of it.
One of the things I really liked as a kid and make for myself is Bayerisher Kraut. Basically sauteed cabbage with caraway seeds, salt and pepper. Was usually served with a good polish kielbasa and pan fried potatoes. Mustard with the sausage, of course.
Cabbage should be harvested in cool to cold weather for a sweet flavor.I find those harvested in hot weather to be inedible. I grow it down here in the fall and harvest mostly after a frost.
