Most punt guns were huge muzzle loading guns. Most had bores in excess of 2". Market hunters also used large bore shoulder weapons to make large kills on waterfowl. It was a fascinating time in hunting history.
Years ago, (mid 80s) i had seen a few in the upper chesapeake area but they were mostly display items.
True that.. In fact the book I have on market gunning has lots of pics of those punt gun cannons,, and without exception their muzzle loading and mostly home shop built.
I think the breach loading guns were mostly used in europe with very few examples in the states..
The ones I've seen in the Springfield, Mass museum, were flintlocks with crude stocks that fit into a slot on the bottom of the boat. Equal parts black powder and shot. 2" bore.
This helps! Also keep the cool stories coming
Along with punt guns were also Battery guns that were installed on the front of a skiff or boat. Multiple barrel affairs that fired in succession and were pretty devastating. There is a good book that I have is titled "The Outlaw Gunner" by Harry Walsh that covers this topic and has many illustrations. Think it was published around 1970. It is a good read. Also one titled "Marsh Tales" from same era.
