Went by an LGS today looking for some ~100 gr 32-20 boolets for Mouse farting. No dice, no primers and only four powders.
But noticed a 1917 Enfield in the rack. A Remington, metal looked pristine and the wood dark as sin, Looked at the tag $950! It did not appear to have been issued, wood was pretty unmarked but very dark.
It didn't "follow you" home!:kidding:
Hurry back! Maybe it's still there!

It blows my mind that they want $950 for a rifle that I walked out of the Del Mar, CA gun show with for $120.11 in 1988.

I bought my Bubbaed 1917 for $18 out of a Sacramento pawn shop in 1966. $250 later it is a fine accurate sporter. But still heavy as hell! Great offhand rifle though.
I bought a complete Winchester for $12 from where I was working.......by the weekend the stock was cut,soon as I could afford a Bishop stock ,it had that,next the ears cut and a scope mount and a Sportco 25/barrel fitted and chambered in 25/06.....i still have it ,and it still vaporizes crows at 400 yards.
The 1917s are very nice rifles. I actually prefer it over my 03A3.
That’s a deal especially if it’s in unissued condition. Dark wood wouldn’t put me off.
A year and a half ago I walked out of Cabelas with a bubbaed P-17 it is now a 308 norma mag in a boyds stock love the 1917's billfold was light by $150.00 they can still be found.
Paid $19.00 for a new One in 1966 @ Modell's in the Bronx, NYC. That was high priced then but it was New. The salesman combined it with a New Springfield 1903 for a total Of $49.00 + tax. Took them home on the NYC Subway because i did not Drive.

I like the M1917 better than the M1903, even though I own and shoot both. Here is a trip down memory lane:
I got my Eddystone (full military) in 1963 for $7.50 and $2.50 shipping from DCM. In college I got a Remington for $21.00 in 1967 and in 1968 got a Winchester for $25.00 including a mint original bayonet. I was a poor college student going to school under the G.I. Bill at the time. I shot high power club matches with the Eddy during those years. The Rem and Win both shot a foot high with Ball at 100 yards with the battle sight while the Eddy shot to point of aim with Ball at
100. The Eddy is my favorite and likes my cast boolits.

I haven't tried much cast in my 1917 yet. I just got a 314299 mold and need to cast a bunch to break in the mold. I'll be trying the 314299 on my 1917 though this spring. I Just need to get the scope back on it. Using the rings on my Scout scoped Krag just now. My Eddy was a mess when I got it and it took a while for me to get it fixed up. But it is a heck of a gun. I like the heavy barrel on it, 5-'18 dated and re-crowned and just beautiful bore. I just shoot my carbines too much.
Best bolt action mechanism EVER, IMO.
The 299 profile bullet a winner. Ended up with NOE's 312, 314, and 316 versions to cover all eventualities.

I agree- the M1917 is the best bolt action ever. I tried all the heavier Lyman .311 boolits and found the Lee .312 185-1R the best sized .309.
