I have a Winchester 92 carbine that is being relined and I'm looking for a H-110 load. I have a bullet that dresses out at 118 grains and am looking for some help for a starting point. I know H-110 doesn't want to be reduced that much so if anyone has any experience where the rubber hits the road on this one - it would be appreciated.
Not many people want to do that, but I suspect Paco Kelly has written about it. If it were me, I would figure out what a 100% density load would be depending on what bullet I was shooting, reduce that to 90% to start, and go up 1% at a time until I was satisfied. Likely that will end up at about 95%. The cases won't last long but you won't hurt the rifle and it will be about the same as a full loaded 30 carbine for performance.
I've got an old Paco Kelly article that list 17.0 gr H110 with a 90 gr. jacketed bullet generating 25,500 cup for a 'strong, Level 2 gun'. Same article lists several H-110 loads for 'Level 3' guns' with pressures of 30,000 cup or greater. If it were me, I believe I'd stick with Level 2 (or even Level 1) loads in a relined rifle.
btw...7 gr. of AA#5 under a Lyman 311008 (115 gr) is gopher-whacking accurate out to about 125 yds from my Uberti Low Wall.

Does relining a 92 make them weaker? I wasn't aware it would make that big of a difference. I'm not looking for a hot load but not looking for a mouse fart load either. I'd like to be somewhere in the 1,600fps range.Quote:

I have shot 15gr of H110 with a 100gr bullet for 1900fps out of a 10" T/C barrel. I have found that AA7 will provide more accuracy than H110 in this caliber. I have settled on 12gr of AA7 and an Accurate Mold bullet #313120. Bear in mind this cast bullet is sized to .312 and being shot in a .308 bore so the pressure is a tad higher with it in my T/C. The 100gr bullet is a jacketed Varmint factory bullet at .308".
Bottom line is that playing with H110 in this cartridge did not provide the level of accuracy I was seeking. The Accurate powders have much higher potential in that arena. While I like H110, it's use in the 10" tube in this caliber was not the best choice for me. I suspect that may be the same in your M92 as well. Give Accurate #7 and #9 an evaluation as well.
When using smokeless powder in my Marlin, I have found that 2400 works quite well. And will produce a lot more than 1500 fps. If that's all you are looking for, then the above recommendations of AA #5 or #7 would be a good choice, as would Unique or Herco since that's barely faster than a black powder load goes out of a rifle.
I get 1,352 fps out of a 5.5 SAA clone with 11.5 gr H110 under an RCBS 32-98SWC. Standard deviation is 29 so I bet if you went up a bit from there you'd get something more stable in a rifle.

Just an FYI: Fired a string of my .32-20s over the chrono this afternoon. 7.0 gr. AA#5/Lyman 311008/Remington SP/Starline brass: 1340 fps with an SD of 8 (10-shot string) from my Uberti Low Wall. Test string, off sandbags, left a ragged 1" hole (with one called flyer) at 50 yards.

Does relining a 92 make them weaker? The action steel and hardening process is the weak link.
Read the Paco Kelly article to determine which 92 grade you have depending on action steel and hardening. I've got a new winouko that I've run some pretty stout loads through.
