Not sure if this is in the right spot, but I think it is a BP cartridge so....
Had my eye on a sported Greener that recently sold on Gbroker. It was listed as being chambered in 40/2.355. I looked all over for any info on that round and even looked at case measurements to try and figure this out. Best I could guess was maybe a .303 Brit necked up to .40 but not certain.
Anyone know what this might have been? Thanks.
There were a number of 40 caliber black powder cartridges but nomenclature was given as caliber and powder capacity i.e. 40/50, 40/65 etc. Might try the dimension tables in Cartridges of the World and see which ones would have a case length of 3.255 or slightly shorter as the chamber may a bit longer than the actual cartridge case.
That would be most likely a 40-70 st, or possibly the 40-72 winchester
I know this is an old thread. 40-70 Sharps Straight is 2.5" long. I make mine from .405 Win. I make brass for my 40-60 Maynard from .303 BR.

2 3/8" is 2.375, so if it was a gun dealer they usually can't measure or know so much that isn't so (as The Gipper said).
