Guess I'm getting really old!

What is it with this Powder coated **** stuff! Can't get into it ...Don't like it ! Like my hands & beard to smell of Ben's Red....like my fingers to feel greasy with Ben's Red! Like my wife to say I smell funny when getting into bed at night! ( yeah I'm old not much going on except stink) Maybe somebody should arrange a shoot off : Old guys with greasy lubes against young guys with "Pink " boolits!.............. who is in? Where does the lead: go down the bore or in the bore! Geeze Pink boolits!!!

I am in. What are we shooting for speed or accuracy or both? Set the bar but not too low. How about best accuracy from a rifle at say not less than 2400 fps and from a hand gun at say half that 1200 fps. 10 shot groups rifles at 100 yards and hand guns at 50 yards.
I will be shooting in the greasy section.

Heck Yeah! Bullshop: I knew you would be in the greasy section..... ( your boolits shoot one ragged hole on my charts & no residual PB! in the bore)

I have the Hi-Tek coating, I like it for handgun use. Rifle always get grease. Always.
I haven't decided if I will continue coating or go back to all grease.

Talking to Run the other day he mentioned he might try the Hi-Tek coating just to reduce oxidation of bullets in storage. Seems he thinks a 5 gallon bucket of a single bullet is just a start point.....

He is considering it. Not as a lube but an anti-oxidation coating for long term bulk storage of bullets.

I grew up watching the Lone Ranger on TV. It was one of my favorite TV shows. I guess that's why I think all "bullets" should look like silver bullets, not like something an ex-wife would have drug home from a Mary Kay sales meeting. [smilie=l:

Wow. My Pa always told me if I didn't like sumpin', don't use it and shut up about it! If you go to the Coatings and Alternatives section you'll read about accuracy, handling, cleanliness, etc., and there's some comparisons there too. I'm only 67 but I ain't afraid of sumpin' new and fer sure ain't stuck in 1969...

It don't have to be one or the other.

Another greaser. I did he powder coating thing and had excellent results. Went back to lubing. I hated the whole process. To me it was messy, tedious and a general PITA. I'm glad it's working for other people and they'll get no condemnation from me.
I wouldn't give you the time of day for it.

Love the Red greasestuff that Ben makes no problems with nothing from pellet rifles to (yes I idd did say pellet) to the real bang-bangs

Jim . . . I'm with you . . . both as far as being old and as far as liking grease . . .

I will admit that I have looked at the PC from a distance . . . just out of curiosity . . . . not saying' anything is wrong with it . . . my wife tells me that I need to be more "open" to change . . . I just can't bring myself to shoot cartridges that look like lipstick . . . . :-)

I'm going to stick with being a "greaser". Used Vaseline hair tonic to slick back my 1960's hair- do and my Lyman 450 lube/sizer has long been paid for so we will just keep on keepin on.

I don't care for the way them tecno-colored boolits look....it just ain't natural!

I think you all should go with silver boolits.... Not that I'd ever shoot them but I'd love mining the berm after you go :)

Seriously though I'm enjoying the PC, and getting my Fiancé to shoot was a rarity. Now that her pink gun shoots pink boolits she goes much more often now. That is a huge win for PC in my book.

Just to put it out there> The Gold Hi-Tek coating was tested and approved in Australia for indoor shooting as it reduces airborne lead.
I do use alot of Hi-Tek coated boolits and have powder coated. I have gotten full jacketed velocity and beyond with the Hi-Tek but have not gotten quite a small of group sizes from the HT as with wax based lubes.
A 30-06 with a 200gr boolit at 2,500 fps with 1 3/4" 100 yard groups is nothing to sneeze at though.

I have been thinking of trying it, but just to get a few more thou in diameter on some rifle bullets for oversize bore. Looks like a lot of trouble though. I just don't like change. I recently worked up enough nerve to try tumble lube with White Label's Super X-Lox. It just seemed, in my thinking, that it couldn't possibly work. Got to have the grooves filled you know. It works fantastically though. But I still run most everything thru Lube-sizer.

I'm a greaser. I really don't want to fool with PC when what I'm doing now works just fine. As to Run needing to PC to keep his boolits from oxidizing...quit casting so dang many! Either that or shoot em' up quicker:)

I think I'm going to stay in the greaser camp. I will not throw stones at powder coating but I found what works for me and I'm too old school in my thinking to change.

I had some of my boolits PCed and tried them against regular lubed. I couldn't find advantage with either. Both worked satisfactorily, but neither were easier, or less time consuming. I already have 3 lube/sizers mounted and a bunch of lube made up. Having to dedicate more equipment in order for a new process, that isn't a major improvement, isn't in the cards.

I am a Greaser.

I like to collect and remelt lead from the range scrap. Going to stink like hell with all those heads having that PC tomfoolery ;-)

There is really only one way to truly and accurately see results. One: Do it the old fashioned way. You should already have results by the binder load. Two: Try the same exact loads in the same exact guns except powder coated instead of lubed.

Three: Compare data. This mine vs yours is BS. It proves nothing. It only compares what you have against what someone else has and does not provide any meaningful data to consider. Now all you loudmouths... who's gonna do it and who all are just gonna keep whining about it?

P.S. FWIW I have never powder coated a bullet in my life.

I did a swap and received some 40 cal PC'd boolits. I have loaded them, but I havn't shot them yet.
I'd consider doing the PC myself,
but I havent figured out how to apply it with a Lyman 45 [smilie=p:

I been playing with the PC have not gotten into testing lubed against PC but my results with the PC have been good so far. I have coated some pure lead 220 grs to shoot in my 300 BO they did great but the draw back was deforming them while sizing and even seating them.
Another thing that is good about PC is I can load lets say red bullets hot and blue med and green as plinking loads. People that are pro PC will sing its praises and those who are anti will talk it down, and the few that are on the fence.
Its a new twist on a old practice it may work out or fade away so now you can buy jacket lead plated or cast swage even paper patch now you can coat with HT or PC or Alox.
If you can believe it some people even shoot BP still and love it.

I don't see it as an all or none proposition. Each has a niche.

Hi-Tek is working well in many of my handguns. It is clean in the guns, in the dies, and in storage of coated bullets.

I haven't done enough work in rifles to really have a feel for what it can do. For now I am using traditional lubes for those loads.

Powder coating isn't really even on my radar.

Coat, then grease with a really weak lube. Best of both worlds?

What method are you using to apply your coating? I'm thinking about trying the tumble method with some pure lead 230 grain Lee's to shoot suppressed in my 300 blackout. Regular lubes gunk up my silencer too much.

Hi-Tek is a liquid coating applied to bullets. It is very different from powder coating.

I want to try some coated bullets with traditional lube. The coating does reduce lead/bore contact and might increase surface hardness a tiny bit. If it can help reduce gas leakage then it should be a good thing.

I am in the old school/old fart club and I am only 39 until December! I shoot 45-70s, 30-30s, and 45 long colts primarily. I have other calibers available, I just don't shoot them. Why should I starting messing up 100+ year old calibers by adding crud that don't need to be added? Heck I don't even shoot jacketed bullets anymore, WHY would I want to add more DOW chemicals to anything I shoot? If you like extra time and extra processes of junking up your bullets with stuff then by all means whatever melts your butter. I was young and dumb once upon a time, even tried that lubalox and moly coat crud way back when. What did I find? I found out I still like cast lead. Cast lead still shoots best for me. I have alot less to do if I stick with cast lead. What else do I need? About a million more pounds of powder, primer, and lead :p

Have been described by those who know me well as a stoic by others as a curmudgeon, whatever! I am old school myself, but have nothing against the colored projectiles for handguns. It is sort of a to each his own proposition. Sure do like some of the modern lubes however, that beat a lot of the old stuff.
