OLD NRA formula was equal parts beeswax, paraffin, and Vaseline.
In their element, those are reported to have been on the short list of the most accurate lubes of all time. Add soap for heat and PAO or Ester two-stroke for cold and that would be pretty dang close to what we're working with now.
